    Job Summary:

    This fully on-campus in-person position is in the Office of Online Learning & Services/Distance, the central instructional design service provider for St. John’s University under the Executive Director for Distance Education and the Office of the Provost. The instructional designer I reports directly to the Assistant Director of Digital Learning, who is responsible for the day-to-day operational management of the instructional design team.

    The Instructional Designer 1 (ID1) contributes to the success of technology-enhanced, online course delivery by providing advice and experience in the use of innovative learning design, educational technology applications, and applied pedagogical practices under the direction of the Assistant Director for Digital Learning. The Instructional Designer I is capable of producing courses that employ recognized best practices in the field. The incumbent in this position can complete multiple design and faculty development projects under the supervision of the Associate Director. As part of their professional practice, the ID1 is expected to develop a thorough understanding of best-practices in the design and instruction of online, hybrid, and technology-enhanced pedagogies.

    The Instructional Designer 1 should have professional experience and/or graduate coursework in distance education and adult-learning pedagogies and a desire to develop as a professional in the field of learning design. This team member is a willing collaborator with faculty across campus and is willing to work with faculty to create quality instruction in the online learning environment, most particularly in the asynchronous learning modality. The incumbent in this position is comfortable working with and contributing to a team-based environment.

    The ID1 works with faculty and administrators across the campus, including the five colleges and the University Libraries, to ensure student success in the delivery of technology-based online learning. Under the guidance of the Assistant Director and the more experienced instructional designers, the ID1 will work closely and partner with faculty to create engaging, interactive, and pedagogically sound online course design by adhering to best practices and standards in the fields of online learning and distance education. In addition to having experience collaborating on projects in a team-based environment, the ID1 is expected to solidly understand and remain current with emergent pedagogical practices and evolving approaches to teaching online and distance education in the higher education environment as well as a working knowledge of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and Inclusive Design principles.

    Essential Functions:

    • Instructional Design (80%) - Provide instructional design support to University faculty, departments, programs, colleges, and related academic units.
    • Faculty Development (20%) – Design, develop, and deliver faculty development trainings, workshops, courses, and projects relating to online learning, distance education, instructional design, and related online, hybrid, and technology-enhanced distance education topics. This may include the administration of OLS/DE faculty-development offerings and recommendations regarding existing and new initiatives.

    Competencies:

    • Working knowledge of best practices in instructional design and current pedagogical theories.
    • Working knowledge of the learning theories and strategies that support best practices in online and technology-enhanced teaching, particularly in the asynchronous modality.
    • Show experience with a learning management system (i.e., Canvas) and a range of learning technologies.
    • Demonstrated experience and/or coursework in the delivery of faculty training and development specifically for online courses (facilitated and non-facilitated), workshops, and online resource repositories for instructors.
    • Ability to work as a contributing and collegial member of a team.
    • Willing to support and foster equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility as a member of the St. John’s community.
    • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.

    Work Environment:

    This position operates in a professional office environment that utilizes a combination of individual and team-based approaches to achieving outstanding outcomes. The use of standard office equipment, such as personal computers, printers, copy machines, etc., is required.

    Physical Demands:

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, move about, sit; carry work and use controls, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, and communicate effectively.

    Environmental Conditions:

    Possible exposure to typical office dust and noise.

    Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

    This administrative position is full-time, on-campus, Monday through Friday and the hours of work are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. To accommodate special events, work hours may be adjusted occasionally, including earlier start and end times, evenings, and weekends.

    Travel:

    Travel is primarily local and may include visits to the other NY campuses.

    Required Education and Experience:

    • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in academic technology or education.
    • One (1) – two (2) year(s)’ experience supporting and/or collaborating with faculty in their teaching and/or related demonstrated experience or coursework.

    Preferred Education and Experience:

    • Masters’ Degree, preferably in academic technology, education, or related fields.
    • Two or more years’ experience as an instructional designer, educational technologist, course builder, or faculty trainer.

    In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual salary range for this position is $62,400 - $65,000.     This position may be relocated to any of St. John’s University’s physical locations at any time.

    • Act as liaison between clients and production teams.
    • Enter and track a high volume of data related work components and updates to client project tracking system
    • Day-to-day management of projects, entering specifications using job management software, and ensuring proper priority is given to each job to meet client expectations.

    • Attend and set relevant client meetings, production and project management status calls bringing in appropriate resources from Creative Services as

    • Assist with proofreading copy, artwork, agency and printers’ proofs as requested
    • Maintain project documentation and proper routing of projects through studio utilizing established review/approval processes
    • See that all work completes established review/approval processes before being reviewed by clients or turned over to suppliers
    • Maintain project schedules/calendars to ensure that work proceeds (both internally and with clients) according to plan and deadlines, drawing the attention of account management to any potential problems before they occur
    • Set up and maintain databases for external art resources (account set-up, managing contract documentation, etc.)
    • Maintain client reference notebooks and/or digital archives for account, detailing past work and work-in-progress, and all pertinent information needed for accurate proofreading and meeting client standards
