    LAW SCHOOL COUNSELOR (PART-TIME)

     

    St. John's University School of Law seeks applications for the position of Law School Counselor. Reporting to the Associate Dean for Administration, the Counselor will oversee the Law School's mental health and wellness programming.  The Counselor will be an instrumental  part of the Law School's strong, inclusive, and vibrant student-facing team, and will have responsibility for developing and implementing a wellness program that prepares our students for success in law school and in the practice of law.

     

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

     

    • Design and implement a comprehensive mental health and wellness program that focuses on law student well being.

    • Develop and deliver workshops on mental health issues.

    • Provide individual and group counseling, assessment, and crisis intervention services to a diverse population of law students.

    • Identify and develop services for at-risk student populations including (but not limited to) first­ generation professionals, students from underrepresented backgrounds, and student's with disabilities.

    • Provide consultation services to student groups, faculty, and staff within the Law School.

    • Partner with Student Services, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, Career Development, Admissions, and Graduate Studies to support students of concern and serve as part of the Law School's safety net for students.

    • Assist with logistical planning and execution of semesterly "Wellness Week" initiatives. 

    • Prioritize counseling students experiencing acute, time-sensitive mental health challenges.

    • Collaborate with Student Services on monthly "Wellness Newsletter".

    • Design and implement a system of metrics to evaluate the success of the wellness programming.

    • Discrete projects as needs arise.

     

     

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

     

    • Master's degree in counseling or closely related field.

    • Must be licensed to practice independently (LMHC, LMFT, LCSW) in New York.

    • A commitment to being part of an inclusive and anti-racist law school.

    • Experience working with a student population, particularly with students of color, international students, first generation students, and LGBTQ+ students.

    • Strong diagnostic and therapy skills.

    • Demonstrated commitment to the highest ethical standards of professional  practice, as well as personal and professional integrity.

    • Strong crisis assessment and crisis management skills.

    • A strong work ethic and commitment to excellent service.

    • Exceptional written and oral communication skills.

    • Demonstrated ability to work effectively, both independently and collaboratively, within a collegial environment.

    • Experience in a student-facing role.

    • Adept in the use of the Microsoft Office Suite and other standard business and academic applications.

    • Ability to combine the pursuit of excellence with a spirit of kindness and collaboration.

    Required Skills Required Experience

  • Qualifications
    • Bachelor degree in Accounting or role with 5-7 years of relevant work experience OR demonstrated ability to meet the job requirements through a comparable number of years of applicable work experience.

    • CPA and/or Masters in Taxation preferred

    • SOME EXPERIENCE WITH U.S. INTERNATIONAL TAX RETURNS IS STRONGLY PREFERRED

    • Familiarity with OneSource suite of products preferred

    • Ability to apply work experience and knowledge to analyze issues

    • Ability to organize and prioritize resources effectively

    • Strong functional computer knowledge

    • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
