    Position Title: Laboratory Technician


    Position Function: The Lab Technician reports directly to the PHS Department Lab Director to achieve the strategic priorities of the Department and the University. The position requires interacting with Assistant Director of Laboratories, lab supervisors, lab technician and graduate instructors with limited interaction with students, faculty and university staff.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    PREPARE PURCHASE ORDER REQUESTS FOR UNDERGRADUATE LAB CONSUMABLES AND EQUIPMENT

    • Conduct physical inventories of chemicals, drugs, hypodermic needles, computer devices, equipment and supplies.
    • Determine ordering needs and create a list of materials for purchase and preparation as required for each semester's lab courses.
    • Prepare purchase requisitions for all of the undergraduate Generate records for purchase orders and their receipt.
    • Assist lab director and supervisors in determining equipment needs for undergraduate labs: computers, centrifuges and specialized equipment.
    • Prepare and distribute bulk solutions and reagents for undergraduate lab
    • Organize, and store lab materials including chemicals, preserved animals, solutions, reagents, and equipment for purchased and bulk items.
    • Consolidate and supply all consumable items and chemicals for each lab exercise to lab

    MAINTAIN LABS DATABASES

    • Maintain and update labprep protocols in Canvas and lab materials database.
    • Update the list of lab chemicals, equipment and supplies for assigned lab course.
    • Maintain inventory lists of equipment, computer devices, chemicals and supplies.
    • Assist in testing and troubleshooting lab activities.
    • Responsible for the maintenance of equipment such as distillation units, deionizers and centrifuges.
    • Maintain Certificate of Fitness.
    • Update animal use protocols, monitor the usage of animals for undergraduate lab activities and maintain compliance according to federal, state and John's University regulations.
    • Prepare, inventory and monitor the use of controlled substances.
    • Renew licenses and follow up and maintain records as per protocols and regulatory guidelines.
    • Oversee and maintain non-transplant human specimen as per the SOPs.

    RESPONSIBLE FOR ORGANIZATION AND MAINTENANCE OF PREP LABORATORY

    • Storage and placement of chemicals, glassware, reagents and consumables.
    • Maintain compliance with university, state and federal health and safety requirements, e.g. allowable limits for alcohol storage and other chemicals.
    • Follow health and safety guidelines for waste disposal.

    Requirements, Skills and Experience

    • A Bachelor in Science or a Master in Science (preferred);
    • 3-5 years of related experience preferred but not required;
    • Good skills with proficiency in Excel, Word, Outlook and with training perform database entries in the PHSLABS databases and LMS (Canvas);
    • Ability to interact professionally with diverse group of students, faculty and support
    • Excellent oral and written communications skills;
    • Motivated, focused approach, proactive;
    • Work effectively as a team member and participate in improving the lab organization and activities;
    • Conducive to a flexible schedule to support lab activities and class schedules;
    • Attend professional development functions when required;
    • Assist lab director with protocols, lab activities, communication and resolving conflicts

    In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual salary range for this position is $40,800 - $48,000 . St. John’s University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.

    This position may be relocated to any of St. John’s University’s physical locations at any time.

    PROFICIENCY WITH:

    • Delivering Business Process Management software solutions with demonstrable value generation
    • Ability to articulate business issues/concerns with people from a variety of technical, solution, industry, executive, and cultural backgrounds
    • Ability to identify risks and raise for discussion as appropriate both internally and with the customer
    • Ability to effectively drive large complex customers to make important decisions
    • SQL and ability to develop efficient and complex queries.
    • Reading/interpreting HTML and Java Script.
    • At least one major relational database platform (SQL Server, Oracle, DB2, MySQL) plus familiarity with at least one other.
    • Navigating both Unix and Windows environments.
    • Various web-development technologies including HTML, CSS Selectors, SOAP and REST web services.

     

    FAMILIARITY WITH:

    • Web application server architecture such as Tomcat or other J2EE platforms, including web services (SOAP and REST), CSS Selector, JSON, networking.
    • Navigating various operating systems and desktop applications.
    • Coding in one or more programming languages (e.g. Java, .NET, C#).
    • ETL tools or data warehouse and business analytics technologies.
    • .NET framework using C#, ASP, ADO, XML, etc.
    • Implementing full life cycle projects for large enterprise clients.

     

    BENEFICIAL:

    • Experience with Visual Studio and Team Foundation Server or other source control and defect tracking tools.
    • Experience with Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment tools such as Jenkins, Artifactory, or similar.
