    POSITION SUMMARY 

    The LGBT Network is seeking a full-time LGBT Community Educator responsible for the coordination and delivery of the organization’s Safe Schools Anti-Bullying Initiative, a multi-faceted array of outreach, education, school organizing, campaigns and youth leadership programs that work to address and prevent the bullying of LGBT youth.  The LGBT Community Educator reports to the Program Manager, Youth Services and Education.

    PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    The LGBT Community Educator is responsible to:

    • Deliver and facilitate anti-bullying workshops, trainings, and campaigns for students, school staff, parents, and community members in schools and various community settings
    • Coordinate and facilitate weekly Safe Schools Team, a youth leadership and empowerment program
    • Plan and coordinate outreach and training initiatives for gay-straight alliance (GSA) clubs in middle, junior, and senior high schools
    • Organize annual “National Coming Out Day Campaign” with schools and community organizations
    • Promote and deliver youth leadership trainings to promote and foster in-school “days of action” including the “National Coming Out Day Campaign” and “Day of Silence”
    • Lead planning and organizing of annual “Night of Noise” event
    • Serve in the rotation to staff and coordinate the weekly Friday night program, OUTlet
    • Assist in the planning and implementation of various organization programs and activities
    • Conduct outreach and client recruitment to maximize program utilization and promote program services
    • Represent organization at relevant community events and collaborative committees
    • Document, track, and monitor participant utilization for program reports 
    • Write and/or prepare grant reports, and ensure all grant reports are submitted in a timely manner
    • Other duties as assigned

    POSITION REQUIREMENTS 

    • Bachelors degree, Masters preferred in human services, social work, or related field, or equivalent work experience
    • One-plus years professional experience, with a preference for experience in a non-profit setting, and/or school-based outreach and education programs, and/or working with LGBT youth and communities
    • Commitment to and knowledge of the LGBT youth community as well as principles of youth development
    • Strong public speaking, networking, and writing skills
    • Experience working with youth and/or LGBT individuals, conducting community education, family planning services, and/or community organizing preferred
    • Knowledge and experience designing and implementing programs that focus on youth development, including youth leadership development and training
    • Reliable transportation and a valid driver license as this position requires travel throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties
    • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with a wide range of people
    • Strong organizational skills for managing and prioritizing tasks and projects
    • Some nights and/or weekends required
