    Job Description

    We have multiple openings for a Film Scanning and Data Processing Specialist. These positions will support the Nuclear Test Data program within the Weapons and Complex Integration (WCI) directorate. You will work closely with staff scientists and information management technicians to digitize and provide access to science and engineering resources. You will be responsible for tasks related to scanning film data and converting captured film into usable film data products for the prompt diagnostics data analysis lead.

    These positions will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

    IN THIS ROLE YOU WILL

    • Coordinate workflow operations for an Archiving and Data Management project, tracking records and documents through data archiving process.
    • Apply knowledge of archival methods and practices to acquire, organize, preserve, and catalog the permanent and historically significant film data (and related documents) of the Laboratory and the Weapons Program.
    • Review, validate and verify scanned documents for quality prior to application of optical character recognition (OCR) software.
    • Solve technical problems associated with scanning, digitization, OCR, key-wording and metadata for data document archiving.
    • Interact with scanning personnel to integrate new technical procedures and guidelines to help post processing of documents/records into digitized archive.
    • Develop, establish, and maintain OCR standard operating procedures (SOP) for multiple media types.
    • Perform search and retrieval activities of electronically managed information, adding metadata to PDF files of relevant documents, evaluating the fidelity of these documents, and re-scanning them when necessary.
    • Promote and support plans to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within the program.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.

    ADDITIONAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AT THE A07.2 LEVEL:

    • Operate as film data point of contact.  Identify improvements to established procedures and fill gaps in knowledge resources. Train and mentor internal staff and external partners to preserve this knowledge.
    • Recommend and implement improvements to the film data analysis pipeline by developing more complex film data products that rely on combinations of film data and information from scanned documents.
    • Perform quality assurance for new film processing software developed internally and by external partners.  Perform similar assessments of software developed to utilize the film data and make recommendations to software developers.
  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    • Ability to maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security which requires U.S. citizenship.
    • Associate of Arts Degree (AA) in digital media, electronic records management and implementation or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
    • Knowledge of industry archival principles and processes, experience with records management operations, and knowledge of digitization and camera technologies.
    • Familiarity with processing complex documentation for sustainable formats and permanent electronic records.
    • Proficient communication and interpersonal skills necessary to work in a collaborative research environment and to document and organize technical data.
    • Ability to coordinate complex tasks by interacting independently with professionals in the execution of responsibilities with varied and dynamic priorities.
    • Experience with Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Acrobat DC, FileMaker Pro, Atlassian, Jira, Confluence, and version control platforms.
    • Familiarity with arcane media types, such as microfilm, floppy disks, VHS tapes, and CDs.
    • Demonstrated ability/commitment to valuing diversity, equity, and inclusion principles in the workplace.

    ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AT THE A07.2 LEVEL

    • Experience running Matlab and/or python code to identify gaps in software development.
    • Experience in developing standard operating procedures for complex media types into electronic records.
    • Advanced verbal and written communication skills to work in a multidisciplinary team environment, write technical reports, and present film data processing techniques to collaborators across the DOE Complex.

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • Bachelor’s degree in Library Science, History, Political Science, or related degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
