    Job Description

    The Nuclear and Chemical Sciences Division (NACS) in the Physical and Life Sciences (PLS) Directorate has an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to investigate oxygen and hydrogen stable isotope exchange between water and hydrated uranium oxide materials. The position will support a multi-disciplinary team developing new forensic signatures of nuclear materials.  This position is in the Environmental Isotope Systems group of the Nuclear and Chemical Sciences Division.

    IN THIS ROLE YOU WILL 

    • Conduct fundamental research into isotope exchange between water and hydrated uranium oxide materials.
    • Synthesize uranium oxide compounds using various routes.
    • Design and carryout experiments to simulate environmental exposure of uranium oxides.
    • Analyze nuclear materials using a combination of thermal gravimetric analysis, isotope ratio mass spectrometry and isotope ratio infrared spectroscopy techniques.
    • Analyze and interpret experimental data and compare with model predictions.
    • Function as an independent researcher with a high-level of attention to detail.
    • Work well with an integrated, interdisciplinary team.
    • Maintain professional and institutional visibility through participation in conferences.
    • Document and publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    • PhD in chemistry or related field.
    • Experience applying isotope ratio mass spectrometry to address research questions.
    • Experience with radiochemistry and nuclear materials synthesis.
    •  Proficient written, verbal, and organizational skills necessary to effectively collaborate within small and large work groups.
    •  Interpersonal skills necessary to interact with a diverse set of scientists, engineers, and other technical and administrative staff.

    • Experience combining multi-instrument data sets to interpret complex samples.
