    Job Description

NOTE: This is a two-year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years.

The Biosciences and Biotechnology Division (BBTD) of the Physical and Life Sciences (PLS) Directorate at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is seeking a candidate for a postdoctoral researcher position in the area of quantitative metabolism. The research will focus on developing methods for the quantitation of metabolic products and pathways in biological systems using radio-labeled precursors measured by Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS).  Postdoctoral Researchers at LLNL should expect to continue to receive training in performing independent research that is complementary to the work of other members of their department, while also participating in multidisciplinary projects.  The selected candidate will work with a dynamic interdisciplinary team of scientists and will report to the Human Health Sciences Group in the Biosciences and Biotechnology Division.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES

    • Participate in the development and validation of new methods to quantify metabolites in biological systems using AMS- specifically coupling mass spectrometry analysis with AMS analysis for Parallel Accelerator Mass and Mass Spectrometry (PAMMS) analysis.
    • Conduct research on the biological mechanisms and metabolism in cellular systems, animal models or humans using radiolabeled substrates and accelerator mass spectrometry.
    • Administer carbon-14 labeled compounds to cell culture and animals; prepare samples for AMS analysis
    • Analyze samples for carbon-14 content using an Accelerator Mass Spectrometer
    • Organize, analyze, and present data from research at seminars, technical meetings, national and international conferences.
    • Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals.
    • Collaborate with others in a multidisciplinary team environment both at LLNL and in other national laboratories and universities to accomplish research goals.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    • PhD in Chemical Biology, pharmaceutical chemistry, Analytical chemistry, Biochemistry, or related field with emphasis on quantitative analytical measurements.
    • Experience using complex analytical instrumentation (such as LC-MS, LC-MS/MS, UPLC, GC-MS or IRMS) to understand cellular systems.
    • Experience with analytical chemical methods for quantifying metabolites (such as quantitative isotope-dilution MS, isotope ratio MS, biomarker development).
    • Experience with method development using analytical instrumentation such as Mass Spectrometry.
    • Ability to understand and analyze data produced by quantitative analytical equipment.
    • Proficient verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment and present and explain technical information.

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • Experience utilizing radioisotopes in biological research
