    Job Description

    We have multiple positions open for Precision Assembly Technicians in the B321C Inspection Facility. You will be responsible for performing precision assembly and inspection related procedures, techniques, and standards (Quality Assurance and ASME Y14.5 Dimensioning and Tolerancing). This position is in the Manufacturing Engineering Section (MES) of the Materials Engineering Division (MED).

    This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

    In this role you will

    • Set up and utilize a variety of moderately complex measuring tools, gauges, and inspection data acquisition equipment.
    • Assemble, inspect, and/or characterize precision components using high accuracy assembly and measurement stations.
    • Provide inspection and Quality Assurance related documentation that clearly defines and evaluates the measured data for parts and assemblies.
    • Acquire moderately complex data using computer-based data acquisition and controls.
    • Design, fabricate, maintain, assemble, and disassemble intermediate to advanced mechanical components and systems, using established work control processes and procedure requirements.
    • Machine components using conventional lathe, mill, and other manufacturing process machines.
    • Apply a basic knowledge of materials and manufacturing processes to solve basic mechanical problems.
    • Utilize industry standard techniques and fundamental knowledge to install and characterize fiber optics.
    • Collaborate with Physics and Engineering staff to perform developmental and experimental setups.
    • Maintain a high level of safety awareness, while working in the laboratories.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.

    Additional job responsibilities, at the 984.3 level

    • Provide general technical support, while applying advanced knowledge, to engineers and senior level technical staff for preparing and coordinating laboratory experiments.
    • Collaborate with scientists, engineers, technicians, and high-level personnel to provide general technical support to various programmatic tasks.
    • Set-up, utilize, and provide technical direction and training for others on a wide variety of advanced inspection practices, setups and computerized data acquisition equipment, inspection processes, machine controllers and operation.
    • Identify, analyze, and resolve advanced inspection challenges and recommend solutions for complex technical problems.
  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.
    • Associate degree in an engineering technology, machine tool technology, quality control or equivalent completion of an apprenticeship program in the machinist/inspector trade, or the equivalent level of education and related experience.
    • Strong organizational skills and ability to handle multiple tasks at the same time.
    • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently, under general supervision, in a team environment and in close cooperation with MED team members, engineering and facility support personnel.
    • Experience designing basic mechanical components and systems.
    • Ability to maintain documentation relating to experimental assemblies.
    • Effective verbal and written communications skills.
    • Experience working effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
    • Will be required to work in areas with classified, radioactive, and toxic materials.
    • Ability to travel domestically in support of offsite experimental test campaigns.

    Additional qualifications at the 984.3 level

    • Advanced level experience equivalent to completion of an apprenticeship program in the inspection or machinist trade with extensive inspection experience including demonstrated proficiency with precision inspection equipment and Quality Assurance.
    • Advanced technical skills, knowledge, and experience in precision inspection related procedures, standards, and techniques on a wide variety of precision inspection equipment.

    Qualifications We Desire

    • Experience programming and operating Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM’s) using PC-DMIS and/or Quindos software.
    • Experience inf CAD/CAM software package (Mastercam, SolidWorks, or CREO) to produce 3D models and generate 2D detail drawings for fabrication.
    • Experience using PC data file management (e.g., Excel, ASCII, DMIS, IGES, VDA, STL).
    • Good spatial awareness and geometrical thinking.
    • Strong fine motor skills.
