    Job Description

    La Scuola Custodian and Kitchen Assistant helps oversee and manage the day-to-day operations of campus buildings and facilities, keeping them clean and safe and managing lunch service. His/her responsibilities include but are not limited to:

    •        janitorial service, yard and building cleaning and maintenance
    •        lunch set-up and service, kitchen cleaning
    •        daily curb duty during drop-off and pick-up hours and parking management
    •        events management

      The Custodian and Kitchen Assistant performs daily routine cleaning tasks (sweeping, mopping, emptying trash cans, cleaning adults and kids bathrooms) and replenishing stock supplies in bathrooms and classrooms to keep the building and the grounds looking clean and tidy. He/she ensures common areas are clean, organized and clear from any hazards and may assist school staff in handling deliveries and moving heavy items.The Custodian and Kitchen Assistant will work with Facilities Manager to ensure custodial practices meet guidelines provided by local and state health authorities.    The Custodian and Kitchen Assistant arranges use of buildings and facilities for routine set ups and breakdowns during recurrent and/or special events. This might include setting-up refreshments and helping school staff in closing/locking the building.   The Custodian and Kitchen Assistant serves delivered meals to students and staff members and prepares refreshments and snacks for special events. He/she daily cleans the lunch room and kitchen, loads and unloads the dishwasher and maintains cabinets and countertop areas cleaned and organized.   The Custodian and Kitchen Assistant takes care of order, receive, stock and inventory food and kitchen and janitorial supplies.   The Custodian and Kitchen Assistant supervise drop-off and pick-up operations in white zone, activates tow-away services when needed and directs parents during the daily procedures.   The Custodian and Kitchen Assistant reports to the Facilities Manager for maintenance and repairs needed, responds quickly and professionally to the requests listed in “La Scuola Facilities Requests Log” and uses “La Scuola Calendar” to monitor special events and tasks.   The Custodian and Kitchen Assistant partially manages his/her own work schedule to ensure completion of tasks as expected and within a reasonable period of time.  Scheduling may shift due to changing priorities of La Scuola.   REPORTING STRUCTURE:   The Facilities Assistant falls under the direction of the Facilities Manager.  This position collaborates closely with the Campus Managers, Kitchen Assistants, and Maintenance Technician.

    Applicants should be strong team players and be very proactive and flexible. Final candidates need to be prepared for a teaching demonstration (or a video if they are overseas).

    Prior to beginning work and as a condition of employment in order to comply with the law, all employees must provide documentation to prove eligibility to work in the United States.

    In addition, the final candidate will need to pass both Criminal Justice Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation Fingerprint Clearance and a physical exam, and provide a recent copy of a negative TB test and other immunization records.

    Salary will depend on qualifications and experience.

    Additional Information

    WORKING CONDITIONS AND ENVIRONMENT   The Custodian and Kitchen Assistant is primarily scheduled for a 20-hour work-week, Monday to Friday but can change up to 40-hour work-week from depending on campus assignment and the needs of La Scuola. Hours and schedule to be set forth by the Facilities Manager and may change based on the needs of the school.    The work schedule mainly overlaps with the school’s hours of operation, but part of the quarterly cleaning will happen during weekends and/or school breaks and there may be some required overtime in addition to some evening and/or early morning duties when school events and/or renovations occur.

    The work location may be at any La Scuola Campus including our PreK campus at 728 20th Street, our K-4 campus at 735 Fell Street or our Middle School campus at 3250 18th Street depending on facilities needs and at La Scuola’s discretion.   The Custodian and Kitchen Assistant often works in the school buildings, although sometimes s/he works outdoors and in inclement weather.  Travel to other buildings or grounds may also be required.   REQUIREMENTS   Work experience in janitorial or custodial position and good proficiency in English are required. Additionally, the ability to bend and stand for long periods of time is needed; may need to lift as much as 30 pounds.   Ability to work autonomously and problem solving skills are ideal. Strong communications skills to facilitate working in a school environment and with a diverse and multicultural community are highly recommended.   Additionally, the ability to bend and stand for long periods of time is needed.
