Fulltime opportunity with our biotech startup client in Berkeley, CA

Scientist opportunity to join the Downstream Process Development & Scale-Up (DSP) team to lead the development of robust, scalable downstream processes from the R&D level out to the manufacturing development.

This person will be an important team member working to rapidly develop microbial strains to produce natural product medicines.

In this role, the Scientist will:

    • Design, lead and assist in bench/pilot-scale studies to support downstream process development, optimization, characterization, and scale-up. Develop protocols using a wide range of purification & separation methods.
    • Design, review, process, and report data appropriately. Emphasis on process flow diagrams, yields, mass & energy balances, and cost modeling.
    • Propose, establish, and maintain equipment to grow capabilities for purification, separations, and characterization. Design and carry out small-scale experiments to expand the knowledge base of the product suite.
    • Conceive ideas to reduce the cost of manufacturing products, and develop and implement experimental plans to test and evaluate the feasibility of ideas.
    • Support tech transfer of developed processes to allow for scale-up at contract research/ manufacturing organizations. Interface, coordinate, and provide on-site support as required.
    • Oversee downstream process operations for robustness testing of established processes.
    • Document experimental studies in reports, datasheets, and presentations and author/edit standard operating procedures (SOPs). Present experimental work to internal and external collaborators.
    • Mentored and direct junior scientists/engineers in bench-scale downstream process development.
    • Coordinate with upstream fermentation group for starting material for downstream process development work.

    Qualifications Include:

    • Degree in the Biological or Chemical Science/Engineering field with relevant experience: 0-3 years (Ph.D.) / 5+ years (Masters) / 8+ years (Bachelors) of relevant industrial experience in downstream process development and/or purification of small molecules from complex matrices (e.g. fermentation broth).
    • Hands-on experience with a wide range of separation and purification technologies (centrifugation, filtration [both dead-end and cross-flow], liquid-liquid extraction, precipitation, crystallization) desired.
    • Experience with tech transfer, CRO/CMO support and scale-up support of established processes is a plus.
    • Experience in small-scale operations/manufacturing is a plus.
    • Experience overseeing direct reports desired.
    • Ability to work both collaboratively and independently as required.
    • Strong planning, organizational, time management, and communication skills.
    • Travel (Up to 15%) may be required (when manufacturing operations are ready to set up)
