Laboratory Assistant – Job Description

Position Summary: Under the supervision of a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Technician, the Laboratory Assistant performs routine lab testing, specimen processing, clerical duties, and quality control in accordance with CLIA and hospital standards.

Key Responsibilities:

Collect, receive, process, and analyze patient specimens

Perform routine laboratory testing and report accurate results

Maintain records, logs, and quality control documentation

Conduct instrument maintenance and basic troubleshooting

Prepare reagents using established laboratory procedures

Assist with clerical duties (filing, charting, phones)

Notify appropriate staff of abnormal or critical results

Follow Standard Precautions and infection control protocols

Support phlebotomy staff and collaborate with healthcare team

Perform additional duties as assigned within scope of licensure

Compliance & Standards:

Adhere to all CLIA, OSHA, Joint Commission, and hospital regulations

Maintain patient confidentiality at all times

Ensure accuracy in testing, reporting, and documentation

Demonstrate professionalism, ethical behavior, and teamwork

Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent required

Preferred:

Preferred: LSBME Laboratory Assistant License

Preferred: Phlebotomy experience
