    Job Summary

    Develops welding techniques, procedures, and application of welding equipment to problems involving fabrication of metals, utilizing knowledge of production specifications, properties and characteristics of metals and metal alloys, and engineering principles.

    Essential Functions

    • Conducts research and development investigations to develop and test new fabrication processes and procedures, improve existing or develop new welding equipment, develop new or modify current welding methods, techniques, and procedures, discover new patterns of welding phenomena, or to correlate and substantiate hypotheses.
    • Prepares technical reports as a result of research and development and preventive maintenance investigations.
    • Establishes welding procedures to guide production and welding personnel relating to specification restrictions, material processes, pre- and post-heating requirements that involve use of complex alloys, unusual fabrication methods, welding of critical joints, and complex post- heating requirements.
    • Evaluates new developments in welding field for possible application to current welding problems or production processes.
    • Directs and coordinates technical personnel in performing inspections to ensure workers' compliance with established welding procedures, restrictions, and standards; in testing welds for conformance with national code requirements; or testing welding personnel for certification.
    • Contacts personnel of other agencies, engineering personnel to exchange ideas, information, or offer technical advice concerning welding matters.
    • May perform experimental welding to evaluate new equipment, techniques, and materials.
    • Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code section IX, Welding and Brazing Qualifications 
    • ASME Practical Welding Technology and Government Welding experience.
    • Studies engineering and technical publications to keep abreast of technological changes and developments in industry.

    Additional Responsibilities

    • May help design prototypes or modifications to existing product or equipment.
    • Support of and involvement in company, department, and/or safety policies, procedures, programs and activities.
    • Maintenance of a clean and orderly work area.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering field or related technical field or a combination of education and experience with 5 or more years relevant experience and/or training.
    • Experience working with Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code section IX, Welding and Brazing Qualifications, government welding specifications and AWS. Familiar with manufacturing processes such as heavy equipment manufacturing, welding technology, systems and pressure vessels, materials technology and manufacturing methods technology.
    • Must have knowledge of a variety of computer software applications in word processing, spreadsheets, database and presentation software.
    • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers and customers.
    • Ability to work with mathematical concepts and apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
    • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

    Work Environment: Works in office and production environment; may be exposed to moving mechanical parts; heat and moderate noise from machinery while on the production floor.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but occasional visits to areas with high noise levels or other physical hazards will require the use of personal protective equipment.  Safety glasses with side shields and steel-toe shoes are required on the production floor.

    Normal Work Schedule:  The hours and days of work are established as needed by operations and at the direction of management and, while generally as shown below, may be changed (increased or decreased) by management as required to meet the needs of the business.

    Hours of Work:  Generally 40 hours per week Monday – Friday

  • Qualifications

    To perform this job successfully the candidate must currently be a State of Illinois Certified Police Officer and must possess a current Drivers License. Must work at least 6 shifts per month during the Marine Unit Season and this minimally totals 36 hours per month. Should have knowledge of principles and practices of law enforcement and police science, as practiced in the State of Illinois. Individual should have knowledge of State laws and local ordinances which govern the County of Lake and knowledge of how and when to apply “DEADLY FORCE” in the enforcement of laws or the apprehension of criminals. Must have the ability to quickly assess situations and to use sound judgment in defusing potentially dangerous human interaction problems as well as the ability to handle stressful, potentially violent situations and individuals in a firm, professional and deliberative manner. Candidate must have the ability to perform strenuous physical tasks and to demonstrate good physical and psychological fitness ability in the safe and effective use of firearms, motor vehicles and other specialized equipment. They should be able to operate a watercraft (boat) in a safe and effective manner according to established policies and procedures. Individual must have the ability to swim and complete a 3rd Class Navy Swim Test, the ability to regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds.
