    Job Description

    Job Description

Mature and old growth forests in Southwestern Washington and areas surrounding Puget Sound are rapidly disappearing, as the State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) auctions them off to logging companies with virtually no oversight, public input, or media attention. The Legacy Forest Defense Coalition is a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to stopping the senseless clearcutting of these last few remaining natural forests.

    • We are working to accomplish this goal in several ways:
    • Social media campaigns focused on educating the public about individual timber sales and logging on state forestlands
    • Networking and petition writing
    • Participation in the SEPA review process
    • Working to challenge DNR timber sales in court
    • Development of an alternative management strategy for state forestlands
    • Testifying at Board of Natural Resources meetings

We are currently looking for an entry-level environmental attorney who is licensed in Washington State. The attorney will work closely with our executive director and legal team to prepare complaints, respond to motions, and communicate with attorneys representing DNR.

This is currently a part-time contracted position, but may be extended depending on the workload. Work from home/set your own schedule.

    Required Qualifications:

    • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school
    • Admission to the Washington State bar association
    • Licensed to practice law in Washington State
    • Strong communication skills
    • Interest in forest ecology and conservation
    • Knowledge of state environmental law preferred but not required
    • Ability to manage a litigation case load and meet deadlines

    Responsibilities may include:

    • Review and file complaints in superior court
    • Manage case files and communications with defense attorneys
    • Represent LFDC in hearings
    • Respond to motions
    • Review and file records and briefs
    • Prepare and present oral arguments
    • Provide legal counsel and guidance on various legal matters
    • Other duties as assigned

We have an active and motivated network of volunteers, a proven track record, an impressive list of accomplishments; and positive, working relationships with other leading environmental organizations such as the Olympic Forest Coalition, Washington Conservation Action, Sierra Club, Audubon Society, and the Washington Forest Law Center. If you are interested in joining us, we invite you to submit your resume, cover letter, and references to info@wlfdc.org.
