    Job Description

    The Workers’ Compensation defense legal assistant enhances attorneys’ effectiveness by developing case information, evidence, and settlement options; tracking cases; supporting attorney's trial proceedings. This position will support multiple attorneys with the preparation of documents for Workers’ Compensation cases in our Chicago office.

    Job Functions:

    • Provide support for attorneys and back-up assistants as needed.
    • Prepare pleadings and electronically file via CompFile to include Appearances, Request for Hearing, Settlement Contract, Motion to Consolidate and other pleadings.
    • Prepare merge templates and forms, transcribe dictation from digital dictation software, and proofread documents.
    • 90% of the job is typing and transcribing dictation, coordinating depositions and IME’s and preparing any necessary letters and notices, maintenance of files, including filing, and coordination of court appearances.
    • Profile and maintain documents in a document management software program to ensure case materials are electronically saved and current.
    • Keep cases organized by establishing and organizing files; monitoring calendars; meeting deadlines; documenting actions; inputting information into file database and case management software.
    • Enhance trial proceedings by organizing evidence; preparing exhibits; scheduling witnesses; ensuring that witnesses are ready when needed.
    • Fast paced and accomplishes organization goals by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests, exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
    • Other duties as assigned.
  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    • High school diploma or GED (or equivalent) required.
    • Typing speed of 60-70 WPM
    • 3+ years of legal support experience in a law firm required.
    • Dictation experience required.
    • Working knowledge of court rules and procedures.
    • Microsoft Word experience required; Excel and PowerPoint experience preferred.
    • Outstanding organizational, interpersonal, and administrative skills.
    • Excellent attention to detail with the ability to multi-task and prioritize a high-volume caseload.
    • Must be self-motivated and able to meet deadlines under pressure.
    • Firm and Client Confidentiality required.
    • Ability to work independently and reliably.
    • Ability to work with the team.
    • Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision.
