Seeking Licensed Veterinarian – Federal Subcontract Opportunity (Baton Rouge, LA)
Augustine Angels is seeking a licensed and experienced Veterinarian to subcontract on a federal project supporting the National Hansen’s Disease Program (NHDP). This unique opportunity involves providing part-time veterinary services for exotic and research animals, including mice and armadillos, at a federal vivarium located at Louisiana State University’s School of Veterinary Medicine in Baton Rouge, LA.
Location: Baton Rouge, Louisiana Start Date: September 1, 2025 (estimated) Hours: Approx. 100 hours annually (monthly visits + occasional consults) Contract Type: 1099 Subcontractor Competitive compensation based on experience and credentials
Responsibilities Include:
Monthly on-site visits to perform preventative medicine, inspections, and consultations
24-hour on-call availability for emergency consultations (remote)
Administration of DEA-controlled substances
Advanced treatment and emergency procedures for research animals
Participation in semiannual program reviews and facility inspections
Compliance with federal records, privacy, and animal welfare regulations
Qualifications:
DVM or equivalent veterinary degree (required)
DEA license and ability to handle controlled substances
Prior experience with research or exotic animals preferred
Familiarity with laboratory animal protocols (IACUC, NIH, etc.) is a plus
Must be able to pass federal compliance training and security protocols
Strong communication, professionalism, and attention to documentation
