Life Safety Code Surveyor – Remote
Essential HealthCare Solutions (“EHS”) is seeking experienced Life Safety Code Surveyors to support nationwide healthcare facility compliance and safety survey operations. Life Safety Code Surveyors play a critical role in evaluating healthcare facilities for compliance with federal regulations, NFPA standards, CMS requirements, and applicable life safety and fire protection codes governing healthcare occupancies and long-term care facilities.

Responsibilities
This position is fully remote with travel requirements up to 75% nationwide.
The Life Safety Code Surveyor will serve as a member of multidisciplinary survey teams conducting a variety of healthcare facility surveys and compliance reviews involving both long-term care and non-long-term care healthcare settings. Survey activities may include recertification surveys, complaint investigations, comparative reviews, follow-up visits, monitoring surveys, and life safety inspections.
Facilities surveyed may include:
- Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNFs)
- State Veterans Homes (SVH)
- Community Living Centers (CLC)
- Ambulatory Surgical Centers (ASC)
- Intermediate Care Facilities for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities (ICF/IID)
- End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) Facilities
- Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facilities (PRTF)
- Hospitals
- Critical Access Hospitals
- Hospice Facilities
Life Safety Code Surveyors travel nationwide to perform onsite evaluations of healthcare facilities to determine compliance with federal life safety regulations, fire protection requirements, and healthcare occupancy standards.
Responsibilities include:
- Conducting onsite life safety and physical environment surveys of Medicare and Medicaid certified healthcare facilities
- Evaluating compliance with:
- NFPA Life Safety Code requirements
- Federal healthcare regulations
- Fire protection standards
- Healthcare occupancy requirements
- Preparing for surveys through offsite review activities including review of facility documentation, inspection records, and prior survey findings
- Performing:
- Facility tours
- Physical plant inspections
- Fire protection system reviews
- Record reviews
- Interviews with facility and engineering personnel
- Assessing multiple areas of facility safety and physical environment operations, including:
- Fire alarm systems
- Sprinkler systems
- Means of egress
- Smoke barriers and compartments
- Emergency preparedness systems
- Fire drills and testing documentation
- Inspection, testing, and maintenance records
- Identifying deficient practices and documenting noncompliance findings accurately and thoroughly
- Discussing survey findings and deficiencies with facility leadership throughout the survey process and during exit conferences to ensure understanding of cited concerns
- Reviewing plans of correction and determining whether corrective actions appropriately address identified deficiencies
- Conducting follow-up surveys and monitoring visits to confirm implementation of corrective actions and sustained compliance
- Completing detailed written reports and supporting documentation within required timelines
- Assisting with surveyor training, facility education activities, and participation in workgroups or quality improvement initiatives as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum three (3) years of experience conducting Life Safety Code inspections, fire safety reviews, healthcare facility inspections, or physical environment compliance evaluations
- Experience accrediting, certifying, inspecting, or evaluating healthcare facilities serving long-term care populations
- Successful completion of CMS Basic Life Safety Code Training required
- Strong knowledge of:
- NFPA standards
- Life Safety Code requirements

- Demonstrated ability to conduct federal surveys, complaint investigations, and regulatory inspections in accordance with:
- Federal regulations
- CMS guidance
- State Operations Manual (SOM)
- Survey protocols and procedures
- Demonstrated ability to independently manage survey activities and prioritize assignments effectively
- Strong analytical, communication, interviewing, and written documentation skills
- Ability to professionally discuss regulatory findings, resolve conflicts, and collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary teams
- Ability to work independently and as part of a survey team
- Ability and willingness to travel nationwide up to 75% of the time
Preferred Qualifications
- Fire Inspector I (NFPA) certification
- Prior VA, CMS, or state survey agency experience
- Experience with:
- Healthcare occupancies
- Long-term care facilities

- Current continuing education related to:
- Fire protection standards

Compensation
Estimated compensation range:
- $78,000 – $90,000 annually
