    Peninsula Community Center, a ministry of Peninsula Covenant Church (PCC), builds community by providing personal, healthy, and meaningful connections through aquatics, fitness, tennis, and community programming. PCC is a vibrant and forward-thinking church located in Redwood City, dedicated to serving our community and making a positive impact through our outreach programs including our Community Center. PCC employs over 150 seasonal and part-time staff to support various community efforts.     PRINCIPAL OBJECTIVE

    The Lifeguard Instructor is responsible for delivering high-quality American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification courses, ensuring participants are trained in water rescue skills, surveillance, emergency response, and professional lifeguarding standards. This role upholds safety, instructional excellence, and Red Cross program compliance while creating a positive and supportive learning environment. The instructor will teach approximately 3–4 lifeguard certification classes per year.

    PRINCIPAL WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

    The Lifeguard Instructor reports directly to the Aquatics Director and works closely with the Aquatics and Swim Team Coordinators. This role collaborates with aquatics staff to support lifeguard staffing needs and ensure program consistency, safety standards, and participant success.

    WORKWEEK

    Hours and shifts vary based on class scheduling.

    Instruction is limited to approximately 3–4 classes per year.

    SUMMARY OF KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

    Instruct American Red Cross Lifeguarding courses in accordance with Red Cross standards and curriculum requirements.

    Evaluate participant skills and knowledge to determine certification eligibility.

    Ensure a safe, professional, and engaging learning environment during all instructional sessions.

    Maintain accurate course records, attendance, testing documentation, and certification submissions.

    Enforce facility safety rules and be prepared to execute the facility Emergency Action Plan (EAP).

    Communicate course needs, concerns, and outcomes with the Aquatics Coordinator and Aquatics Director.

    Serve as a role model for professional lifeguarding behavior, safety awareness, and teamwork.

    Other duties as they pertain to and aid in supporting the ministry’s principal objectives.

    PROFILE SKILLS & CORE COMPETENCIES

    Strong instructional and facilitation skills with the ability to clearly teach lifeguarding concepts and hands-on skills.

    Excellent communication skills, providing clear feedback and guidance to course participants.

    Thorough knowledge of lifeguarding principles, water rescue techniques, and emergency response procedures.

    Ability to maintain a safe, organized, and inclusive instructional environment.

    Professional, dependable, and accountable in all responsibilities.

    Collaborative team player who works effectively with aquatics leadership and staff.

    EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION

    Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) certification required.

    Current American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification required.

    Prior experience teaching lifeguarding or safety-based certification courses strongly preferred.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    Must be able to demonstrate all lifeguarding skills required by the American Red Cross curriculum.

    Must be able to swim 300 yards continuously, tread water for two minutes without using arms, and retrieve a submerged object from depth.

    Must be able to be in the water and sun for extended periods.

    Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally and assist with rescue simulations.

    DOJ background clearance required.

    Must adhere to and model PCC’s Safe Church policies.
