    ROLE: Machine Operator

    LOCATION:  Chattanooga, TN 

    POSITION SUMMARY:

    The In-Line Operator has the responsibility of maintaining and correcting both the extrusion and thermoforming processes of the in-line machine while maximizing production.  The operator must work safely and ensure quality on the line assigned.  This position takes direction from and reports directly to the Shift Supervisor. 

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Work safely and ensure others in department are working safely
    • Must be aware of and follow all safety policies and JSA’s, including personal protection equipment, lock-out/tag-out, housekeeping, MSDS, etc.
    • Responsible to identify, report any work hazards, must eliminate hazards within ability.
    • Must be able to complete operator training modules and pass written and practical tests.
    • Must be forklift certified by WNA (requires a valid driver’s license)
    • Responsible for running conditions of the extrusion, thermoforming and trimming segments of the machine.
    • Responsible to maintain all equipment by performing all required PM functions and reporting any equipment problems for repair.
    • Responsible to assist in training of temps, packers, and other operators working on the machine in product specifications, housekeeping standards and safety standards.
    • Operate extruder, former and trimming segments of the machine; make adjustments, set temperatures, and monitor the entire process.
    • Troubleshoot quality and processing problems and make corrections accordingly
    • Clean up, change over and setup extruder including mixers, loaders, dryers, grinders, gear pump, screen changer, auto stacker, etc.
    • Figure percentages of and setup virgin regrind, color and additives, shovel regrind material in prescribed time with minimal waste.
    • Must be skilled in the use of SPC techniques to control the production process.
    • Must be able to accurately measure machine performance, scrap, waste, and downtime.
    • Must be able to use a razor knife frequently and in a safe manner.
    • Complete production reports and all paperwork as assigned
    • Good attendance and punctuality required
    • Start up Extruder, Former and Trim Press as required.
    • Monitor all machine process parameters.
    • Adjust all machine process parameters based upon SPC criteria.
    • Set up, adjust, and maintain extruder die.
    • Set polish roll gap.
    • Monitor, adjust and control material and color blends.
    • Operate forklifts safely in confined areas.
    • Maintain and clean hoppers.
    • Operate and maintain gear pump, mixers and screen changer.
    • Adjust and maintain all forming parameters including heats, vacuum and form air variables.
    • Line out all production processes in a timely manner with minimal waste.
    • Adjust trimming process and ensure parts are trimmed out to spec.
    • Perform all required PM procedures: change filters, maintain oil and grease levels, check all safety switches and interlocks.
    • On PET lines check dryer levels and operations regularly.
    • Make certain that scrap material does not accumulated around the machine.
    • Follow all lock out/tag out procedures.
    • Assist in changing over form tooling and dies.
    • Follow all approved JSA and safety methods
    • Maintain housekeeping.  Clean area around machine daily.
    • Ensure line is clean, neat, and orderly
    • Make and seal cartons as required.
    • Place cartons on conveyor or skids
    • Monitor and maintain part quality within agreed upon specifications using SPC techniques.
    • Do some maintenance tasks as required.
    • Backup and assist maintenance as directed
    • Shut down all equipment.
    • Organize packing requirements. Assist packers as needed.
    • Cross-train with other positions to cover during vacations, illnesses.
    • Give breaks to packers as needed.
    • Miscellaneous duties as directed by supervisor

    CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS:

    • A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent required
    • A minimum of 1-3 Years of verifiable experience
    • Ability to work well in a team environment & motivate others within the team
    • Ability to work with a minimum of supervision   
    • Must demonstrate mechanical ability to work with equipment during training period.
    • Knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices and procedures
    • Normal Dexterity  & Climbing Requirements
    • Ability to lift 35 pounds frequently.
    • Ability to lift 50 pounds, 12 times per hour
    • Ability to lift 70 pounds, infrequently
    • Basic computer skills – data entry and process control inputs and monitors.
    • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating manuals, maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
    • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
    • Ability to converse with other employees or customers concerning operating functions.
    • Ability to apply concepts of percentages, fractions, multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction.
