Rated among the nation's best zoos for children by Parent Magazine, the Zoo is home to over 400 different animals and 40 endangered animals and is the second most attended arts & cultural attraction in Nebraska. The Zoo has been featured on NBC Today, Time Magazine, ABC News, USA Today, Buzzfeed, CNN and National Geographic.

    The Zoo continues to grow each year with more than 345,000 in attendance in 2021 and recently opened a major addition by adding giraffes, tigers, spider monkeys, cheetahs and giant anteaters in a 10-acre addition.

    Responsibilities and Duties

    Overview

    The Lincoln Children's Zoo has an opening for a Director of Human Resources. This position will manage both strategic human resources planning and the day-to-day human resources operations; take the lead on the creation and care of a positive, supportive, high-functioning ecosystem where the practical and tactical responsibilities of Human Resources management are balanced with intentional strategic leadership. Our candidate will understand the vital connection between the happiness of our people and the success of the overall organization. This position will also be continuing to development and implementation of a strategy for Diversity, Equity, Accessibility and Inclusion (DEAI) throughout the organization. The HR Director reports to the Chief Executive Officer.

    Principal Duties:

    • Ability to apply standard human resources’ practices and procedures as well as laws, regulations, and guidelines governing areas including but not limited to associate relations, Wage and Hour, Equal Employment Opportunity, the Family Medical Leave Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and the Fair Labor Standards Act
    • Assist with and advise managers on disciplinary action procedures, coaching, counseling, and documentation.
    • Investigate, resolve, and communicate employee questions, concerns, and issues
    • Fosters and cultivates positive employee relations throughout the Zoo by identifying, developing, and driving philosophies and programs, such as annual performance reviews, diversity and inclusion (DE&I committee), participate in an employee committee that plans staff events, works to improve employee appreciation and engagement across the workplace.
    • Maintains HR Policies & Procedures and Employee Handbook.
    • Monitors and facilitates all Workers’ Compensation and Unemployment Claims.
    • Administer Benefits. Reviews annual benefit plans and suggests changes as necessary to CEO. Assist in creating benefit census and coordinate all benefits processing, including employee enrollment and changes to benefits.
    • Maintains employee personnel files
    • Creates job postings and posts recruitment advertising as directed.
    • Initiates online onboarding for new hires in the payroll system
    • Administers employee information in timekeeping system
    • Completes, and submits employment verifications.
    • Conducts employee exit interviews
    • Provide advice and assistance to managers on staff recruitment. Perform pre-employment screening, background checks, and other hiring tasks.
    • Conduct new hire orientation.
    • Other miscellaneous duties as assigned.

    Required Qualifications:

    • Bachelors or equivalent experience in Human Resources, Management, or Business Administration preferred.
    • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a supervisory role in human resources
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills
    • General knowledge of employment laws and practices.
    • Must be able to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
    • Ability to be respectful, approachable and team oriented while building strong working relationships and a positive work environment

    Personnel Classification: Fulltime/Exempt

    Regular Days Off: Will generally work Monday-Friday schedule. Some nights and weekends may be required,
