  • Responsibilities

    Purpose : To help fulfill the mission of Hill Country Christian School of Austin by teaching and supervising Middle School English class during a teacher’s absence. This role will be for approximately 6-8 weeks (April - May timeframe).

    Accountability : Reports to Substitute Coordinator

    FLSA Status: Exempt hourly

    Qualifications/ Skills:

    • Must be a Christ-follower who upholds, in word and deed, the Hill Country Christian School of Austin’s Core Values and Statement of Faith.
    • Must faithfully attend a church whose fundamental beliefs are in agreement with the Statement of Faith of this school
    • A Bachelor’s degree in English or related field.
    • Must have prior teaching/classroom experience or experience supervising children.
    • Some knowledge or understanding of classical education is preferred but not required.
    • Demonstrated competency in pedagogical skills and proficiency in teaching four language skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking) across diverse learning environments
    • Proven ability to effectively teach English grammar, literature and composition.
    • Exceptional written and oral communications skills

    Responsibilities

    • Deliver engaging and effective English language instruction to students across various proficiency levels
    • Facilitate a positive classroom atmosphere by engaging students in the learning process, maintaining positive rapport with students and families, and creating an orderly environment conducive to learning.
    • Teach subject matter and administer lesson plans and activities as needed.
    • Report to the school lobby to sign in and out each day and receive an identification badge.
    • Carry out a program of study prescribed in the lesson plans left by the classroom teacher.
    • Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
    • Maintain a neat and orderly classroom.
    • Take attendance in accordance with school procedures.
    • Ensure that students are never left unattended in the classroom.
    • May perform duties usually required of absent teacher (e.g., lunchroom duty, hall monitoring, etc.).
    • Know emergency evacuation procedures.
    • Interacts in a Christ-like manner at all times. Utilize the interpersonal relationship method of “Matthew 18” as commanded by Jesus Christ.
    • Adhere to procedures in the Substitute Handbook.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.

    Physical requirements

    • Occasional lifting of 5 to 20 pounds.
    • Must be able to walk our campus, including flights of stairs.
    • Must be able to remain in a stationary position at times using repetitive arm, hand, and finger movements.
    • Needs to frequently move about the classroom to access supplies, equipment, etc.
    • Ability to work in a semi-open classroom setting with frequent in-person interaction and numerous interruptions.
    • Exposure to a variety of childhood and adult diseases and illnesses.
    • Occasional exposure to a variety of weather conditions for recess.
