Position Description

Position Title: Long-Term Substitute Music Teacher — TK–8 Reports To: Principal Employment Period: Mid-September through Mid-January Pay: $170/day

Position Summary

The Long-Term Substitute Music Teacher will provide music instruction for students in Transitional Kindergarten through 8th grade during the regular music teacher’s absence. The teacher will create a positive, engaging, and Christ-centered learning environment in which students develop musical skills, creativity, confidence, and an appreciation for music.

The position includes responsibility for regular music curriculum and instruction, as well as preparation and coordination related to Ascension Lutheran School’s Christmas production and spring musical.

Essential Responsibilities

Plan and teach engaging, developmentally appropriate music lessons for students in TK–8.

Provide instruction in areas appropriate to each grade level, including singing, rhythm, music theory, music appreciation, movement, performance, and other musical skills.

Develop and follow a coherent music curriculum that supports student growth across grade levels.

Create a classroom environment that is joyful, respectful, orderly, and supportive of all learners.

Incorporate Christian faith and the mission of Ascension Lutheran School naturally into music instruction and classroom life.

Assess student learning and provide appropriate feedback and encouragement.

Maintain appropriate classroom routines, expectations, and communication with students and families.

Prepare students for performances and other school-wide musical opportunities.

Continue preparations for the Christmas production, including rehearsals, student assignments, music selection, and coordination with school staff.

Begin and/or continue preparations for the spring musical, including reviewing the existing plans and materials, organizing music and rehearsals, and establishing a clear foundation for the production.

Collaborate with classroom teachers, school administration, and other staff as needed.

Communicate regularly with the Principal regarding curriculum, student progress, performances, and production needs.

Maintain appropriate records and materials related to music instruction and productions.

Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, chapel, and other school activities as reasonably required.

Qualifications

Experience teaching music, preferably in an elementary and/or middle school setting.

Strong musical knowledge and performance skills.

Ability to teach students across a wide range of ages and musical abilities.

Strong classroom management and organizational skills.

Ability to create engaging lessons that encourage participation and confidence.

Experience directing or assisting with school productions, musicals, or similar performances is highly desirable.

A heart for working with children and a commitment to the mission and values of Ascension Lutheran School.

Bachelor's degree in music, education, or a related field preferred, but relevant experience and musical expertise will be considered.

Schedule and Compensation

Term: Approximately mid-September through mid-January Schedule: School-day schedule as determined by Ascension Lutheran School Pay: $170/day
