    Position: Health Education Specialist II #902002

    Program: Youth Center

    Department: Children, Youth and Family Services

    Reports to: Program Supervisor

    Compensation: $16.00 per hour, plus $1.50 per hour Shift Differential Premium for hours worked between 6pm-6am

    Schedule: Monday 12:00pm-8:30pm, Tuesday-Friday 9:00am-5:30pm

    Status: 100%, Full-Time, Non-Exempt, Union

    Probation: 90 days

    DEPARTMENT SUMMARY:  The Youth Center serves youth up to the age of 24 who are currently at-risk of or experiencing homelessness.  The Youth Center offers services in an LGBTQ+ safe and affirming environment and serves as an entry point to assist youth making the transition from homelessness to housing.  Our services include meals, clothing, support groups, a charter high school, GED and college prep program, an employment preparation, training and placement program, case management, counseling, a crisis shelter and a transitional living program (TLP).  Our community-based programs include services for youth at-home, in school or in systems of care.

    JOB SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Program Supervisor, the Health Education Specialist will assist in the development of appropriate HIV prevention strategies targeting persons living with HIV/AIDS and coordinate specific prevention strategies.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    1)    Facilitate and develop HIV/AIDS prevention workshop sessions for young MSM clients of the Children, Youth & Family Services Department. Administer pre- and post-surveys as required;

    2)    Facilitate individual counseling sessions with participants;

    3)    Provide referrals and material assistance to clients as needed;

    4)    Organize and facilitate monthly trips to a community resource center;

    5)    Maintain complete and accurate documentation. Input session data in database on a daily basis and prepare monthly, quarterly and annual reports in an accurate and timely manner;

    6)    Research and maintain current and appropriate HIV/AIDS resources and information for the young MSM population;

    7)    Work closely with case managers and other staff to help ensure all aspects of client’s case plan are followed and provide feedback to case managers as required;

    8)    Work closely with Outreach staff to provide street outreach; organize outreach activities including festivals, picnics, barbeques, trips and conferences;

    9)    Actively network and collaborate with other HIV/AIDS organizations;

    10)    Attend HIV/AIDS trainings when available; 

    11)    Participate in all in-service trainings, staff meetings, planning meetings and other meetings as needed;

    12)    May be required to work evenings and weekends; 

    13)    Other duties as assigned;

    JOB QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

    1)    Knowledge of or experience working with the LGBTQ community and familiarity with issues of particular relevance to LGBTQ people;

    2)    A passion for the Center’s work and its mission to make the world a better place for LGBTQ people;

    3)    6-8 years’ experience in counseling, social work or related field (education in Psychology or related field may be substituted for experience);

    4)    Minimum of 2 years’ experience working in health education and prevention of HIV/AIDS including knowledge of risk reduction, safe sex, substance abuse and current HIV/AIDS information;

    5)    Knowledge and understanding of the issues affecting LGBT youth, including experience working with homeless and at-risk youth;

    6)    Experience in group facilitation and group presentations;

    7)    Good verbal and written communication skills, including strong organizational, detail and interpersonal skills;

    8)    Strong computer skills and knowledge including word-processing, database operations, spreadsheets and other software systems;

    9)    Access to reliable transportation and the ability to be insured;              

    10)    Bilingual skills, a plus (English/Spanish fluency preferred);

    11)    Current CPR Certificate;

    12)    Demonstrated ability to work effectively with people of diverse races, ethnicities, nationalities, sexual orientations, gender identities, gender expression, socio-economic backgrounds, religions, ages, English-speaking abilities, immigration status, and physical abilities in a multicultural environment.
