    JOB SUMMARY

    Under minimal supervision and direction of the Director of Respiratory Care and the Department Supervisor, and according to physician's orders and departmental policy, performs all basic and critical Respiratory Care procedures for patients on Med/Surg and Critical Care Units.

    JOB QUALIFICATIONS
    1. Completion of an AMA approved Respiratory Therapy certification or registration program.
    2. Certification or registration by the National Board of Respiratory Care.
    3. Licensed by the State of Illinois as a Respiratory Care Practitioner.
    4. One (1) to two (2) years previous experience in adult intensive care.
    5. One (1) to two (2) years previous experience in neonatal-infant care.
    6. Current Basic Life Support Certification by the AHA.
    7. Current ACLS Certification.
    8. Successful completion of Intubation Training Program.
    9. The clinical judgment necessary to interpret patients' reactions to all forms of respiratory care and medications and to assist in developing appropriate treatment plans.
    10. A thorough knowledge of routine and critical care respiratory techniques and procedures necessary to suggest appropriate forms of therapy, to perform and evaluate the efficacy of therapy.
    11. The ability to operate, monitor, and maintain departmental respiratory equipment (to include intensive care equipment).
    12. Demonstrates proficiency in performing and interpreting hemodynamic monitoring (to include arterial and Pulmonary Artery Catheter blood sampling, cardiac output, and comprehensive hemodynamic and pulmonary profiles).
    13. Demonstrates proficiency in endotracheal intubation.
    14. The ability to perform arterial punctures and blood gas analysis.
    15. The ability to perform basic life support.
    JOB DUTIES
    • In accordance with physicians' orders and departmental policies and procedures, performs all basic and critical care procedures, including intermittent treatments, aerosol therapy, medical gas administration, aerosolized drug administration, mechanical ventilation, airway management (to include endotracheal intubation), blood gas procurement and analysis, hemodynamic, electrocardiograms, basic life support and assisting physicians with special procedures. Prior to the delivery of care, all patients are evaluated for appropriateness of therapy based on their clinical condition and age.
    • Documents all therapy administered in patients' charts, in form as required by department policy and maintains departmental therapy records.
    • Assists in reprocessing, maintenance, and minor repair of respiratory care equipment.
    • Consults with and advises physicians as to the most appropriate forms of respiratory care.
    • Demonstrates respiratory care techniques and procedures to students, medical staff, and allied health professionals.
    • Assumes the "Charge Therapist" responsibilities as required. These responsibilities include prioritizing and assigning workload to staff, insuring workload is completed and reporting to following shift. The charge therapist is also responsible for adequate staffing of following shift, which may include remaining until relieved of duty.
    • Attends department in-service programs as required.
    • Conforms to the established Standards of Behavior.
    • Other duties as assigned.
