    Job Description

    JOB SUMMARY:

    Luminosity is seeking a Data Engineer or Data Scientist proficient in SQL code to work on our portfolio of projects to:

    1.      Assess, modify, and standardize siloed justice system data for integration and interoperability;

    2.      Assist in the creation and application of business logic for generating research, performance, and outcome (RPO) measures;

    3.      Generate pretrial justice system related RPO measures;

    4.      Create and deploy scripting for use in various data pipeline solutions (e.g., SSIS, SnapLogic, Apache Airflow); and      

    5.      Apply appropriate fuzzy logic matching algorithms (e.g., Levenshtein distance, Double Metaphone) to join siloed data sets.

    We’re seeking a smart, motivated, and detail-oriented person who is qualified to work on all aspects of a project. This position offers the opportunity to work directly with leading policy-makers on projects with immediate real-world impact. 

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    §  Contributes to the design and implementation of an efficient and reproducible data processing pipeline

    §  Works with the team to standardize, transform, and link data across siloed justice software systems 

    §  Cleans, transforms, merges, and matches between large and complex datasets 

    §  Troubleshoots complex SQL queries written by others with little guidance

    §  Writes complex SQL queries that join multiple tables/databases

    §  Given a business problem, independently explores databases/tables to identify best data sources

    §  Analyzes existing data structures, procedures, and queries to identify and suggest improvements and optimizations

    §  Quickly generates ad hoc reports for analysis by the research team

    §  Adapts scripting for use on multiple database platforms (e.g., Microsoft SQL, PostgreSQL, Amazon Redshift)

    §  Reviews existing code and identifies opportunities for optimizations

    §  Develops new and tests, debugs, troubleshoots existing scripts, views, functions, and stored procedures

    §  Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present data in a simple and straightforward way for non-technical audiences    

    EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND CERTIFICATIONS:

    §  Master’s degree in computer science, information systems, data science, analytics, statistics, or a closely related field

    §  All levels of experience will be considered

    TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE OR SKILLS:

    §  Proficiency in reading and writing SQL code

    §  Proficiency with statistical data analysis using Python, R, SQL, SAS, SPSS or Stata is required; ability to work in more than one is preferred

    §  Deep expertise in at least one of the following skillsets required, with basic capability in at least one other

    • Data Extraction, Transformation, and Loading (ETL) skillsets: Writing complex SQL queries that join multiple tables/databases. Given a business problem, independently explore databases/tables to identify best data sources.

    • Data Visualization: Create data visualizations using Tableau, Microsoft Power BI, Sisense, Plotly, Seaborn, D3, ggplot2 or similar

    • Statistics & Statistical Modeling: Create and use advanced machine learning algorithms and statistics such as regression, simulation, risk modeling, hypothesis testing, clustering, and various classification algorithms (e.g., random forests, logistic regression, decision trees)
