    Our leading, global, biotechnology client specializing in regenerative medicine, seeks a Sr. Manager, Occupational Environment, Health & Safety for their Allendale, NJ locations.

    The Sr. Manager, Occupational EHS will implement, manage, and continuously improve environmental, safety, and health (EHS) programs for each North American location. The ideal candidate will develop and implement EHS standards in compliance with federal, state and local requirements. Additionally, the Sr. Manager, Occupational EHS will review all work tasks and establish the necessary EHS requirements for the performance of the tasks, including controlling work practices per the hierarchy of controls – this includes safety reviews of all site-specific projects.

    • Develop, implement, and maintain EHS standards, safety programs, compliance plans and supporting documents in compliance with federal, state and local requirements including necessary training programs
    • Manage the onsite industrial hygiene monitoring system for employees potentially exposed to biological and chemical hazards. Create a plan to evaluate risks associated with cell therapy and supporting laboratory and warehouse activities for risks to personnel health and safety, and the environment including engineering, administrative controls, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and safe work practices.
    • Investigate all accidents and incidents (e.g., incidents, near misses and property damage workplace incidents), and determine the root cause, offering alternatives for correction of the condition(s) that resulted in the incident. Ensure follow-up is done to minimize future exposure and proper records/documents are maintained.
    • Maintain mandatory OSHA Logs and investigation reports. Maintain and update the OSHA 300 log monthly and complete year-end reporting summary.
    • Conduct routine safety observations to ensure compliance with regulatory agencies, company environmental, health, and safety policies, procedures and practices. Perform trend analysis on an ongoing basis to determine current risk mitigation priorities, and adjust control measures activities accordingly.
    • Advise as necessary and appropriate on the risk assessment of new equipment/equipment modifications, processes or facilities, consistent with at least regulatory requirements
    • Track the purchasing, storage, usage and disposal of hazardous materials and organize and implement Safety Data Sheets (SDSs), site-wide.
    • Ensure, in collaboration with Functional Area management, the safety and life equipment is inspected in regular basis and maintains reports (e.g. fire extinguishers, eyewashes, safety showers, hazmat storage areas, fire alarm system, personal protective equipment, etc.)
    • Issue safe work permits (Hot Work, Confined Space, etc.) and supports site contractor safety program
    • In charge of inspection, collection, storage and disposal of hazardous, chemical and biological waste. Proposes implementing and following waste minimization program and assurance of proper disposal practices.
    • Maintain mandatory records (logs, accident reports, injury reports, IH sampling, chemical inventory, SDSs, medical clearances, spill reports, etc.) compliant with regulatory requirements.
    • Collaborate with MRA leadership, Facilities, and other committees on designing and implementing all aspects of Emergency Response and Preparedness.
    • Coordinate the performance of periodic (semi-annual) emergency response/evacuation exercises and maintain the appropriate documentation of those exercises.
    • Assure across functions and site management that Biological Safety Programs are commensurate with the potential hazards are developed and implemented at each facility. Provide advisory guidance to site personnel managing environmental permitting and monitoring, workers compensation, and on-site contractor work.
    • Lead the EHS Audit Program – Collaborate with Functional Area management to ensure the execution, documentation and reporting periodic (minimally monthly) comprehensive safety and health audits of each facility and track closure of findings. 
    • Provide quarterly reports on the status and direction of EHS trends for each site to the organization which assesses program status, program priorities, accomplishments and resource and budgetary needs. Primarily via the company intranet site or other communication forums.
    • Serve as the primary contact with regulatory agencies concerning EHS issues. Ensure the company meets all its legislative compliance obligations with federal, state and local authorities or authorities having jurisdiction such as, but not limited to, OSHA, EPA, DEP-NJ, ADA, DOT, and building & fire codes. Serve as contact for all regulatory agencies for inspections, permitting, and reporting (e.g. air, water, waste).
    • Develop enhanced EHS policies, guidelines and training programs as needed.
    • Establish site annual EHS goals. Track, manage and report on progress.
    • Liaise with global partners to execute the Showa Denko EHS Program and policies and participate in any regional EHS forums
    • Prepare EHS training materials and conduct periodic EHS presentations
    • Organize and lead the Site EHS Committee

    REQUIREMENTS

    • BS/BA in a related Science discipline, certifications in EHS applications (Certified Industrial Hygienist, Certified Safety Professional, or Certified Hazardous Materials Manager) are a plus.
    • 5 to 7 years of Safety and Health experience
    • Experience in developing and managing EHS program, training, and systems
    • A thorough knowledge of cGMP and regulatory requirements for Health, Safety, Equipment in life science industry; understanding of Clean Rooms, Materials Selection and Storage and Facilities operations in the biopharmaceutical is a plus.
    • Expert knowledge about CAA, RCRA, CWA and other related laws and regulations
    • Expert knowledge of safety system analysis
    • Must be a dedicated self-starter with a high energy level and ability to achieve results
    • Proven record of excellent verbal and written communication skills
    • Proven ability to challenge the status quo and regularly think of ways to do things differently together with having strong problem-solving skills
    • Ability to comfortably interact and clearly communicate with individuals at all levels of the organization to provide program updates and reviews
    • Ability to think and plan strategically and work tactically (detail-oriented)
    • Strong collaborative and influencing skills and ability to work well in a cross-functional, matrixed environment
    • Familiar with aseptic gowning practices

    WORKING ENVIRONMENT

    • Must be able to work during the weekend, holidays and as required by the company
    • May be exposed to infectious diseases transmittable through human blood, tissues, or bodily fluids and are expected to utilize universal precautions with all human specimens
    • Must utilize proper PPE when handling all human specimens, gases, corrosive chemicals, and liquid nitrogen
    • May work with hazardous materials and chemicals
    • Ability to be available to coordinate incident response and reporting
    • This role operates within a professional office environment of a manufacturing operations plant. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. Seating is mixed and includes open space seating, cubicle, and office space.
