  • Responsibilities

    QUALIFICATIONS:      

    • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field (Family Studies, Sociology, Social Work, etc.) plus three years’ experience working with homeless families and/or individuals; or an Associate’s Degree in a related field plus 5 years working with homeless populations.
    • Experience interfacing with and recruiting property owners and/or real estate. Must possess strong communication skills both written and verbal.  The CAN Navigator must have the empathy to work with households experiencing homelessness.  Will provide crisis intervention services.

     

    This position requires a knowledge of the issues facing the homeless and chronically homeless populations.  Must be able to communicate with applicants, landlords, property managers, other community agencies and TVCCA and funding source administrations. Strong computer skills required.  May be required to perform public speaking with community groups and other service providers.  Must be organized and able to work with multiple households simultaneously.  Will need a high level of negotiation and mediation skills.  Must be able to build client files and keep them current and in a consistent manner.  Must be willing to be a strong, diplomatic advocate for the clients of the Eastern CT Coordinated Access Network and TVCCA.

    Required Skills

    The ECAN Navigator is a nine-twelve month temporary position. The Eastern CT Coordinated Access Network (CAN) is a collaborative of various service providers, working to assist people experiencing homelessness. Efforts are coordinated through the establishment of CANs to streamline and standardize the process for individuals and families to access assistance. Coordinated Access is required by the Federal HEARTH Act, which governs most of the federal funding communities receive to address homelessness, and supported by the State of Connecticut Department of Housing. The primary goal of the Coordinated Access Network is to help communities focus on rapidly ending each person’s homelessness by connecting them with appropriate housing and resources as quickly as possible. The Eastern CT CAN Navigator will work in tandem to the Project Manager Eastern CT Coordinated Access network to synchronize the utilization of resources offered by partnering service providers through the facilitation of recurring meetings, prioritizing the allocation of available housing resources, ensuring regional data quality, and assisting in case conferencing. The successful candidate must possess the skill sets of patience, understanding and diplomacy to work with a challenging client base. The CAN Navigator must have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with service providers, government officials, and community leaders, as well as an established ability to build, lead, and work within a team framework. The CAN Navigator will be expected to possess good organizational, analytical, and communication skills as well as experience with group facilitation, training, and working in and fostering a collaborative environment. This position will represent TVCCA while serving in an instrumental role to support the entirety of the Eastern CT Coordinated Access network to develop effective, coordinated efforts by providing best-practices insights and linkages to statewide and regional efforts to end homelessness.
