ABOUT THE POSITION
MN350’s Greater MN Organizer will organize in communities outside the Twin Cities metro area, starting with Rochester, to build power and expand MN350’s base of engaged supporters to win campaigns that advance climate justice in Minnesota. The position will rely on MN350’s theory of change by organizing Minnesotans to work together to protect our climate and realize the system changes necessary to build a just clean energy future.
The Greater MN Organizer relies on a broad, deep, and current understanding of Minnesota outside of the Metro area and can bring knowledge of the political priorities for a variety of geographic areas, especially Rochester. Strong candidates will be skilled in grassroots organizing and building and maintaining strong relationships with volunteers.
The work of the Greater MN Organizer supports the growing movement in Minnesota to repair our public processes and transform our dominant economy into one that secures clean air, clean water, a stable climate, and an equitable future for all, regardless of race, class, income or zip code.
KEY POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
Build MN350’s presence outside of the Metro, focusing first on Rochester, in the build-up to the 2022 election
Maintain that presence once the 2022 election season is completed
Lead elections-based events to build power in Rochester and potentially other communities in Greater MN
Lead and develop volunteer leaders and organizers on their action team who are doing issue-based, geographically-based and cultural organizing through MN350 and MN350 Action
Train and develop volunteer organizers in the understanding of and the arts and skills of building power by building teams, including understanding how relationships and the ability to build them are central to building power
Implement plans and action steps for building their teams and campaigns and/or projects
Engage with the Organizing Director, staff organizing team, and volunteer leaders in discerning the campaign that they and their team will engage in as aligned with MN350’s commitment to climate justice and in concert with the passions and drive of those on their teams
Facilitate and/or participate in coalitions when those coalitions help further the goals of the teams that have been built around MN350s climate justice campaigns
Work within campaign or project budget; including tracking budgetary needs and expenses and participating in annual budgeting process
KEY COLLECTIVE RESPONSIBILITIES
Leadership development & culture: Model organizational embodiment of shared values, principles, and practices
Community, stakeholder, and public relations: Serve as MN350’s spokespeople and ambassadors as well as act as liaison to leadership regarding the organization
Fundraising: Ability to ask for money as well as support stewardship of donors through thank you calls as requested by staff leadership
Strategic direction: Engage in, give feedback and collaboratively shape leadership structures and fundraising strategies to sustain the organization as requested by staff leadership
QUALIFICATIONS
Strong candidates will:
Have 2+ years of professional-level (paid or unpaid) experience in community or campaign organizing, issue advocacy, movement building, or a related field
Have experience and a working knowledge of movements for climate justice and racial justice in Minnesota
Be familiar with the political and movement landscape in one or more communities outside the Twin Cities metro area, preferably Rochester
Have a track record for collaborating effectively within and across diverse groups of stakeholders while also working independently and taking appropriate initiative
Have a demonstrated history of using power-building strategies to build effective and cohesive teams of volunteers and building and maintaining productive relationships with grassroots volunteers
Be highly organized with a strength in political analysis and community-based power-building
Have 2+ years of experience working in a nonprofit setting and a comfort level navigating in the nonprofit arena and working effectively to build and maintain networks and coalitions
Have a working knowledge of state local political processes, with proven track record of identifying opportunities for public engagement
Demonstrate an understanding of state and federal 501(c)4 and 501(c)3 nonprofit regulations
RELATIONS & LEADERSHIP SKILLS:
Relationally organized, having significant experience working with Black, Indigenous, People of Color, broad coalitions and multiracial communities, proven ability to build rapport and trust with others.
Ability to collaborate and integrate grassroots ideas with political realities
Proven commitment to embodied leadership with ability to cultivate the leadership of others while also managing several tasks and projects concurrently
Ability to plan and manage multiple projects, consult with various stakeholders, anticipate obstacles, manage timelines, keep staff and volunteers engaged and maintain good spirits.
Excellent organizational and prioritization skills; ability to manage an unpredictable workflow and flexibility to respond thoughtfully and quickly.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Understanding of the structural nature of power and inequity with demonstrated ability to transform it.
Familiarity with transformative justice, healing justice, and decolonization frameworks with willingness to stretch, imagine, and manifest practices within the organizational culture.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
REPORTING
The Greater MN Organizer reports to the Organizing Director and works collaboratively with other staff and volunteers at every level.
LOCATION & PHYSICAL DEMANDS
MN350’s primary office is in Minneapolis, but this position will be based in Rochester. Work is performed in both remote and in-person settings, as safety guidelines allow, and includes significant time using a computer and phone. Occasional travel to Minneapolis and other parts of Minnesota is required to attend events or meet with staff or other stakeholders. Some events are outdoors. Infrequent travel outside of Minnesota, as safety guidelines allow, to attend 350 network meetings or seminars.
Flexibility is needed to work outside normal business hours, including evenings and weekends and occasional extended work hours to accomplish the mission of the organization.
