    Job Title: Machine Shop Inspector

    Location: Payne Engineering & Fabrication Co., Inc.

    Department: Quality Control / Manufacturing

    Reports To: Quality Manager or Production Supervisor

    Position Overview

    The Machine Shop Inspector is responsible for performing detailed inspections of machined parts, assemblies, and components to ensure they meet engineering specifications, customer requirements, and company quality standards. This role plays a critical part in maintaining precision manufacturing quality and supporting continuous improvement initiatives within the shop.

    Key Responsibilities

    Perform first-article, in-process, and final inspections of machined components using precision measuring instruments (e.g., micrometers, calipers, height gauges, CMM,).

    Verify dimensional accuracy, surface finish, and overall quality per engineering drawings and specifications.

    Interpret blueprints, GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing), and work instructions accurately.

    Document inspection results and maintain detailed records in accordance with company quality management systems (ISO 9001 / AS9100, if applicable).

    Identify and report non-conformances, assist in root cause analysis, and participate in corrective/preventive action processes.

    Collaborate closely with machinists, engineers, and supervisors to resolve quality issues and promote best practices.

    Maintain calibration of inspection tools and ensure all measuring devices are in proper working condition.

    Support audits, customer visits, and process improvement activities as needed.

    Knowledge of and ability to perform basic math functions or proficiency in basic shop math skills

    Basic computer proficiency, including documentation data entry and report generation

    Qualifications

    Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; technical or trade school certificate preferred.

    Experience:

    3+ years of experience in precision machining inspection or related manufacturing quality role.

    Experience with CMM programming/operation . Keyence XM-5000

    Skills:

    Proficient in using precision measurement instruments.

    Strong understanding of engineering drawings, tolerances, and GD&T.

    Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving skills.

    Effective communication and teamwork abilities.

    Familiarity with ISO 9001 or AS9100 quality systems is a plus.

    Physical Requirements

    Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 30 lbs.

    Manual dexterity to handle delicate measuring tools and small components.

    Must be able to reach overhead and below the knees including bending, twisting, pulling and stopping

    Must be able to stand, sit or walk for extended periods of time or for an entire work shift on concrete floors

    Work Environment

    Primarily within a machine shop environment with exposure to noise, coolant, and metalworking equipment.

    Required use of appropriate PPE (safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, etc.).

    Must be able to lift and maneuver up to fifty (50) pounds

    Routinely operates/uses equipment, machines, and tools requiring hand-eye coordination and finger dexterity

    Routinely communicates face-to-face

    Routinely performs duties in production floor environment
