    Could you transform yourself into a Mad Scientist? Are you looking for a fun job with children for the summer? If you are a teacher, a performer, an educator, or entertainer this could be the summer job for you! Mad Science of Maine is currently hiring Lead and Assistant Instructors for our summer 2019 Science Enrichment Day Camps. Our camps take place in various towns in Southern Maine and run weekly from Monday-Friday for children ages 6-12. As a Mad Science Camp instructor you would work with different groups of campers each week in different communities, facilitating our exciting predesigned science camp curriculum to inspire the next generation of Scientists! Mad Science camps are a fun mixture of indoor science exploration and outdoor active games.

    Camp Details:

    Camp Dates: June 17-August 23, 2019

    Training Dates: Tentatively Scheduled for June 11 & 13, 2019

    Camp Days: Monday-Friday

    Camp Instructor Hours: 7:30am-3:30 pm (includes set up and clean up time). At times staff are needed from 3-6pm for aftercare.

    Camper Hours: 9am-3pm (Campers start arriving at 8:30 or 8:45am depending on the camp location)

    After Care: 3-6 pm in Portland location only

    Ages of our Campers: 6-12 years (1-6th Grade)

    Camp Group Sizes: 20 Campers Maximum in a camp with 2 Mad Science Instructors.

    Camp Locations: Portland, Augusta, Bath, Brunswick, Buxton, Cape Elizabeth, Cumberland, Falmouth, Freeport, Gorham, Kennebunk, New Gloucester, Saco, Turner, Waterville/Fairfield, Wells, Yarmouth, Dover NH, Durham NH, Stratham NH, & Nottingham NH.

    Facilities: Mad Science operates camp programs in Elementary Schools and Community Centers.

    About Mad Science:

    Mad Science offers unique, hands-on, inquiry based science enrichment camps for children ages 6-12 (Grades 1-6) that are as entertaining as they are educational. Mad Science encourages scientific literacy in children in an age when science is as vital as reading, writing and arithmetic. Our summer programs are a great combination of learning and fun with projects, experiments and demonstrations conducted inside as well as active outdoor games that reinforce the science concepts of the camp program.

    Camp Themes for 2019: Reactions In Action (Chemistry Camp), Eureka! The Inventors Camp, Brixology & Engineering, Spy Academy, Robot Recruit, MAKERS of the Future, Mission Code, and Super Duper Science Sampler.

    Lead Instructors:

    Lead Instructors are responsible for teaching the camp curriculum. Facilitating Mad Science Camp programs requires lots of energy and a love of working with children. With the help of an Assistant Instructor, the Lead Mad Scientist is expected to create a fun environment where Mad Science Campers can get to know each other, feel accepted and included, and learn and get excited about science. One must be able to both educate and entertain to bring the curriculum alive for the children we serve.

    Assistant Instructors:

    Assistant Instructors are responsible for supporting the Lead Instructor with equipment preparation and program facilitation in whatever way needed. Assistants are expected to take initiative to interact with parents upon drop off and pick up and take initiative to interact with campers, especially those who need extra help with projects or with settling a disagreement with a fellow camper.

    Requirements to be a Lead Mad Scientist:

    -Have an outgoing, animated, fun personality!

    -Must have a dependable car and be willing to commute to different schools and recreation centers within approximately 20 miles of your home.

    -Must have experience working with groups of elementary age children in a LEAD position (grades K-6) in which you have followed a lesson plan. We're sorry but just babysitting or being a parent is not enough experience. It must be experience with groups of at least 10 children between the ages of 5-12.

    -Classroom management skills a MUST!!

    -Organized, Responsible, Attention to detail, Independent and also able to take direction

    -Be able to adapt a curriculum to a group of up to 20 kids who are in mixed grades (K-6, ages 6-12 years) and manage any discipline issues effectively and efficiently.

    -Must have availability Monday-Friday from 7:30am-3:30pm in the summer months from June 17-August 23, 2019 (or for most of the weeks in the time frame)

    -Must be punctual (those who are chronically late need not apply), responsible and be easy to reach by phone & email

    -Fun, zany, enthusiastic personalities especially welcome! Being goofy is part of what we do!

    -Do not need to have a science background, but an interest in science is crucial. We will train you on curriculum but it is up to you to bring it alive for the kids!

    -MUST LOVE WORKING WITH GROUPS OF CHILDREN!

    -Must be able to attend our training session in Mid June.

    -Current CPR/First Aid Certification required for Lead Instructors

    -College Degree is preferred.

    -Teaching Certificate is preferred.

    -Science Course work is preferred.

    -Experience with children with special needs is preferred.

    Requirements for an Assistant Mad Scientist:

    • Have an outgoing, animated, fun personality!

    • Must have a dependable car and be willing to commute to different schools and recreation centers within approximately 20 miles of your home. - Have some experience working with groups of children and enjoy working with children.

    • Positive, high energy, “can-do” attitude a must.

    • Must have availability Monday-Friday from 8am-3pm in the summer months from June 17-August 23, 2019. (There could be a week or two that an assistant is laid off due to a low enrollment camp.)

    • Must be reliable, responsible and take initiative to engage with children in a camp setting and assist the lead Mad Scientist with any preparation of materials and facilitation of science experiments and activities throughout the day.

    • Must be able to attend our training session in Mid-June.

    • Do not need a science background but must have an interest in science and a desire to inspire a love for science in children.

    • Comfortable interacting with parents and taking attendance of campers as they arrive and when they are picked up.

    -Current CPR/First Aid Certification preferred (if you don’t have it we will provide this certification course)

    -Some College Preferred

    Note: We do a criminal background check on all employees.

    Compensation:

    Lead Instructors: $400-425/week depending on experience and number of campers

    Assistant Instructors: $300-325/week depending on experience and number of campers
