Position Summary
The Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for executing preventive, predictive (where applicable), and corrective maintenance activities to support safe, reliable, and compliant operation of production equipment. This role performs troubleshooting and repairs on industrial equipment and systems, documents work completed, and partners with Production, QA, and Safety to maintain uptime while meeting GMP and food safety requirements.
Execute preventive maintenance (PM) tasks per schedule and standards to support equipment reliability and food safety compliance. Respond to equipment breakdowns, perform diagnostics and corrective repairs to restore operations safely and efficiently. Troubleshoot and repair mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems (scope based on site needs/qualification). Support predictive maintenance activities (e.g., vibration checks, thermography support, lubrication routes) when assigned. Perform root cause troubleshooting and provide detailed findings to Maintenance leadership to prevent repeat failures. Complete accurate work order documentation in the company CMMS/system, including: Problem description / symptoms, Downtime details and follow-up recommendations Maintain equipment condition standards aligned with GMP/food safety (proper guarding, food-grade lubricants, contamination prevention, tool control). Follow and support Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), machine guarding, and safe work practices; stop work and escalate hazards immediately. Coordinate with Production to perform repairs with minimal disruption and ensure proper line start-up checks after maintenance work. Support installation, changeovers, and minor fabrication/modification work as assigned (e.g., brackets, guards, adjustments). Assist with spare parts activities by: · Communicating parts need to Maintenance leadership/planner · Properly labeling/returning unused parts · Maintaining clean and organized work areas and tool storage Participate in continuous improvement efforts (5S, kaizen, reliability initiatives) and suggest improvements to equipment maintainability. Maintain compliance with applicable OSHA requirements and site safety policies; support audit readiness by keeping accurate records and following procedures.
Skills and Competencies
· Strong hands-on experience troubleshooting industrial equipment in a food manufacturing / GMP environment (preferred).
· Working knowledge of:
· Mechanical systems (motors, gearboxes, bearings, conveyors, pumps)
· Pneumatics and hydraulics (valves, cylinders, regulators, troubleshooting leaks/failures)
· Electrical fundamentals (sensors, relays, VFD basics, panels) consistent with training/authorization
· Ability to read and interpret:
· Mechanical drawings, basic electrical schematics, OEM manuals
· PM procedures and safety instructions
· Strong problem-solving skills: able to identify symptoms, isolate root cause, and recommend durable corrective actions.
· Organized and detail-oriented; able to document work clearly and accurately in CMMS.
· Effective communication and teamwork with Production, QA, and Safety in a fast-paced environment.
· Commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement; consistent adherence to procedures and standards.
Familiarity with lean/TPM concepts is a plus (autonomous maintenance, standard work, 5S).
