    SUMMARY

    The Trial Team Manager is a part-time position for a practicing lawyer committed to South Texas College of Law Houston's nationally recognized Advocacy Program. The Manager mentors competition teams preparing for national tournaments and helps coordinate the recruitment and development of alumni trial team coaches.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    Applicants must have the ability to work independently. Essential job functions for the position include:

    • Guide competition teams preparing for national trial tournaments through fact pattern analysis and work product development prior to alumni coach sessions.

    • Mentor coaches working with trial advocacy teams.

    • Help the Vice President of Advocacy and Senior Director of Advocacy Competitions recruit trial team alumni coaches.

    • Help the Senior Director of Advocacy Competitions with orientations each semester for trial advocacy students and coaches.

    • Help with judge recruitment for regional competitions the Advocacy Program hosts for other schools.

    • Help with judge recruitment for the South Texas Mock Trial Challenge.

    • Act as a South Texas College of Law Houston representative to the national advocacy community.

    • Coordinate efforts with the Vice President, Advocacy and Senior Director of Advocacy Competitions on a regular basis.

    • Comply with all aspects of the Law Schools Customer Service Standards.

    • Generally helping to advance the mission of the College and the Advocacy Program.

    • Completing other duties as assigned.

    Must be professional and confidential of all department data and correspondence. The person must have a poised and professional image; strong ability to multi-task and prioritize in a fast paced environment, excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to interact effectively and efficiently with all employees, visitors and students while projecting a positive image for the area and college. Service oriented with ability to make all visitors feel welcome. Must be computer literate with proficiency in MS Office applications (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) with ability to learn new programs as necessary. Must be detail-oriented and able to work in a fast-paced multi-tasking environment.

    EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

    Applicants must have the following education and experience:

    • J.D. degree; and

    • Participation as a coach in the South Texas Advocacy Program.

    LANGUAGE SKILLS

    Proficient in both spoken and written English. Ability to interpret and explain complex data. Ability to effectively and professionally communicate in one-on-one and small group situations to students, alumni, clients, and other employees of the organization.



    MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

    Ability to perform basic to intermediate math essential. Must possess the ability to analyze numerical data and detect patterns, errors and trends.


    REASONING ABILITY

    Ability to define routine problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions to solve routine problems and/or deal with a variety of variables in situations, especially when department head may be out of office or unavailable. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

    THE ADVOCACY PROGRAM

    The Advocacy Program at South Texas College of Law Houston operates to create, foster, and assist advocacy training. While South Texas has long-standing reputation for excellence in national moot-court and mock-trial competitions, the Advocacy Program has grown and matured to reflect the evolving nature of the provision of skills training in legal education. The Advocacy Program seeks to engage students in a variety of opportunities to help them find their own voices as advocates.
