Manning Asylum Law is hiring an associate immigration lawyer in Houston. With us, you'll focus on asylum - both affirmative and defensive - but will also handle various other immigration matters. You will have a full case load, with responsibility for every aspect of the representation.

You will meet with prospective clients and clients in the office, which is near downtown (parking is easy), and there will also be some opportunity to work remotely. Travel is optional - it's there if you want it. Otherwise, you'll spend your time just in Houston, frequenting the Houston Asylum Office and immigration courts, as well as the USCIS Houston Field Office.

You won't be micromanaged, so responsibility and initiative are of paramount importance in this position.

You've got to love immigration court and have demonstrated expertise in handling the thorniest cases there over the course of at least four years. Detained experience is a plus.

You must speak Spanish fluently and be comfortable using it professionally.

Your research, legal writing and communication skills must be superb.

COMPENSATION: $75,000 - $85,000

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Represent clients before the immigration courts, USCIS, CBP, the BIA, U.S. Department of State, and federal courts
• Prepare and draft applications/petitions for immigration benefits
• Advise clients on possible avenues of relief
• Develop factual backgrounds and legal arguments to support claims for asylum
• Research case law, regulations & statutes to help in defending clients and asserting their rights
• Represent clients in family-based applications, consular processing and other cases
• Legal research and writing in support of various applications and petitions for benefits and claims for relief
• Handle consultations with potential clients

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Four years of experience handling all aspects of cases in immigration court
• Fluent Spanish speaker
• Passion for asylum cases
• Member of any state bar association
