  • Responsibilities

PURPOSE: The Development Coordinator is a key part of our team that makes all of our programs happen through fundraising, grant applications, reporting, and partnership with community leaders and other non-profit organizations. They help Mano en Mano's work shine, and communicate about this work in a way that different stakeholders can understand and engage with (community members, staff, board, donors, volunteers, and more). They ensure that resources are timed with community goals and needs, and that they are flexible enough to meet continually changing community priorities.

COMMUNITY-CENTRIC FUNDRAISING PRINCIPLES: This position operates using Community Centric Fundraising's core principles as a starting point, as well as Mano en Mano's mission and racial equity statement. Please be sure to address how you will use these principles and values in the role in your application materials.

    • Fundraising must be grounded in race, equity, and social justice.
    • Individual organizational missions are not as important as the collective community.
    • Nonprofits are generous with and mutually supportive of one another.
    • All who engage in strengthening the community are equally valued, whether volunteer, staff, donor, or board member.
    • Time is valued equally as money.
    • We treat donors as partners, and this means that we are transparent, assume the best intentions, and occasionally have difficult conversations.
    • We foster a sense of belonging, not othering.
    • We promote the understanding that everyone (donors, staff, funders, board members, volunteers) personally benefits from engaging in the work of social justice - it's not just charity and compassion.
    • We see the work of social justice as holistic and transformative, not transactional.
    • We recognize that healing and liberation requires a commitment to economic justice.

    OUTCOMES:

    • Relationships: All aspects of Mano en Mano's development strategy are grounded in reciprocal relationships and community self-determination.
    • Community Engagement: The communities we work with are centered in the fundraising process and determine fundraising outcomes. Stakeholders are engaged by our communications including annual reports, grant reports, social media posts, and newsletters.
    • Development Strategy: A long-term development strategy guides this work, and annual benchmarks are achieved. When challenges emerge, they are communicated about sufficiently in advance to make programming adjustments if needed.
    • Compliance and Reporting: Mano en Mano meets funder requirements or communicates transparently and in advance when those requirements are not going to be met. Reports are submitted on-time and communicate the priorities of staff and community leadership.
    • Transparency: Stakeholders understand the development strategy, progress towards goals, organizational highlights, and organizational challenges.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Develop, implement, and monitor Mano en Mano's fundraising plans and systems with staff and board leadership. This includes developing a long-term strategy with annual and quarterly outcomes. Mano en Mano uses Network for Good to track individual and business donors, and has a series of grants that it traditionally applies for each year (usually from Maine-based foundations). The Development Coordinator will help to build these into a larger strategy that increases the capacity of Mano en Mano's direct programming, as well as the programming of our fiscal sponsored organizations (Presente Maine and TREE), which fundraise independently of Mano en Mano. The priorities for fundraising in 2021 will be for Access to Essential Services, COVID-19 Relief Funds, and Mano en Mano's new bilingual childcare.
    • Oversee and contribute to the development and tracking of proposals and reports for all foundation and corporate fundraising, with close collaboration with other staff. This includes researching grant opportunities, writing and submitting proposals (with input from staff), monitoring progress towards outcomes, and submitting grant reports.
    • Develop and maintain relationships with community leaders, volunteers, board members, staff, donors, and potential supporters. This includes a variety of associated tasks including writing and sending newsletters (print/online), social media posts, thank you letters, and one-on-one communications (in-person, phone, social media, email, and more). It also includes regularly engaging directly in the work that Mano en Mano does such as volunteering at community events or resource fairs, and capturing photos and videos of the work we do for development communications.
    • Identify, cultivate, and communicate with individuals, businesses, and organizations that align with our mission and values and can support Mano en Mano through their time or financial resources. This includes maintaining a regular presence in the communities that Mano en Mano works with, making presentations about Mano en Mano's work at community events, representing Mano en Mano at partner organization meetings/conferences, writing appeal letters, and following-up with potential supporters. Potential areas for development include: growing monthly donors program, increasing recognition of supporters (financial and otherwise), increasing board member involvement, and establishing fundraising events/campaigns.
    • Collaboratively work with fiscal sponsored organizations to share opportunities, track grant applications, and manage reporting requirements. In particular, the Development Coordinator will work closely with the Presente Maine President, and the TREE Executive Director.

    COLLABORATION AND SUPERVISION:

The Development Coordinator receives regular support and feedback from their supervisor.

    • Weekly check-ins to focus on pending tasks for that week, the work plan for the following week, and any feedback on those tasks to ensure things are working well for everybody.
    • Monthly check-ins to discuss longer-term goals and outcomes.
    • Quarterly check-ins with leadership team to review quarterly results (financial and otherwise), prepare to share this information with the board, and determine course corrections.
    • *Note: Mano en Mano values the perspectives all staff bring to their roles, and expects that collaboration, support, and feedback can be shared between staff in any different roles.
