Basic Job Functions
The Manufacturing & Design Engineer serves as a primary engineering resource for SEA America's manufacturing operations, supporting local fabrication, retrofit projects, spare parts production, and customer-specific engineering requirements. This position develops and modifies designs, creates fabrication-ready documentation, supports manufacturing activities, and collaborates with Purchasing and Supply Chain to ensure efficient procurement and production processes.
The role will provide local engineering expertise that enables the organization to respond quickly to customer requests, resolve design-related manufacturing issues, reduce dependence on external resources for routine design modifications, and support the growth of local manufacturing capabilities.
A key function of this role is maintaining the integrity of engineering documentation by establishing and managing drawing review, revision control, and engineering release processes that ensure suppliers and fabricators receive accurate, approved, and manufacturable drawings.
Primary Responsibilities
Engineering & Manufacturing Support
Support manufacturing operations by providing engineering expertise and resolving design-related production issues.
Create, modify, and maintain 3D CAD models, fabrication drawings, engineering documentation, and Bills of Materials.
Quality control reviews of fabricated parts to verify outputs against design requirements.
Support onsite equipment modifications, retrofit projects, and customer-driven engineering requests.
Develop designs for fabricated components, spare parts, tooling, assemblies, and custom-engineered products.
Review manufacturing processes and recommend design improvements that enhance quality, manufacturability, reliability, and cost effectiveness.
Support prototype development, testing, validation, and implementation activities.
Coordinate with SEA Global engineering teams to ensure design consistency and compliance with company standards.
Assist with new product introductions and local manufacturing initiatives.
Troubleshoot manufacturing and assembly issues and implement corrective design solutions.
Maintain effective communication across Engineering, Manufacturing, Customer Service, Sales, and Project Management teams.
Engineering, Purchasing & Supply Chain Integration
Serve as the technical liaison between Engineering, Purchasing, Manufacturing, and external fabrication suppliers.
Review all engineering drawings, CAD files, BOMs, and specifications received from SEA Global before release to local suppliers or production teams.
Ensure engineering documentation contains all required dimensions, material specifications, tolerances, weld details, finishing requirements, and manufacturing notes.
Establish checks and balances that verify drawing packages are complete, accurate, approved, and revision-controlled prior to procurement activities.
Create and maintain engineering release procedures that provide Purchasing and Supply Chain teams with confidence that released drawings are production ready.
Support Purchasing by evaluating supplier quotations, reviewing technical requirements, and resolving engineering-related questions from suppliers and fabricators.
Work closely with Supply Chain to ensure engineering revisions, BOM updates, and drawing changes are communicated and implemented correctly.
Coordinate engineering change notices (ECNs) and revision updates to prevent ordering from outdated drawings.
Develop standardized processes for transferring engineering documentation from SEA Global sources to local operations and suppliers.
Partner with suppliers and fabricators to improve manufacturability, shorten lead times, and reduce production costs.
Support first article inspections and supplier quality reviews to verify compliance with engineering requirements.
Identify and implement workflow improvements that reduce administrative burden and improve coordination between Engineering, Purchasing, Manufacturing, and Supply Chain.
Document Control & Design Governance
Maintain and update manufacturing drawings, engineering documentation, and CAD libraries to ensure records remain current and accurate.
Establish revision control processes that prevent obsolete drawings from being used for procurement or production.
Manage engineering approval workflows for drawings released to manufacturing and external suppliers.
Verify that all design releases are properly documented, approved, and synchronized with Bills of Materials before procurement activities begin.
Maintain traceability of design revisions and engineering changes throughout the product lifecycle.
Support the development of local fabrication standards and drawing templates to improve consistency and efficiency.
General Responsibilities
Ensure adherence to all safety procedures and good housekeeping standards.
Participate in continuous improvement initiatives that support manufacturing efficiency and business growth.
Maintain effective communication and foster teamwork across all departments.
Other duties as assigned.
