    Job Description

    The Massachusetts Teachers Association (MTA) is a union, dedicated to improving the workplace and the quality of life for all education employees and to protecting their hard-won rights.     The MTA is seeking a BENEFITS SPECIALIST who will manage and assist in the implementation of employee benefit programs and projects and perform a wide range of workplace support services. A successful candidate will have a deep knowledge of benefits and leave management. We are looking for a solid team player who wants to assist in setting up processes in the organization and will work alongside the HR Director in setting up best practices. This position is conveniently located in Quincy, MA. 

    DUTIES FOR THIS POSITION INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

    • Manage employee benefit programs including health, dental, life, AD&D, long-term/short-term disability insurance, COBRA, FSA and 401(k) programs and MTA Pension Plan.
    • Reconcile invoices on a monthly basis for health, dental, disability and EAP plans.
    • Oversee Leave of Absence administration, including STD, LTD, PFML, ADA, Reasonable Accommodation and FMLA.
    • Counsel employees regarding policies, procedures, collective bargaining contracts and other concerns as they related to benefits.
    • Process and monitor all weekly and monthly payroll changes including direct deposit, salary, garnishments, benefit and tax changes.
    • Manage benefit open enrollment process.  
    • Assures accuracy of detailed benefit plan reports and meets specific government filing timelines.
    • Prepare salary reports and workforce analyses.
    • Plan and coordinate materials for quarterly MTA Retirement Plan Committee meetings.
    • Collaborate with the Human Resources Business Partners on new hire orientation.
    • Oversee the Social Events Committee and Wellness Committee.
    • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of statutes and regulations related to employment and employee benefits.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN THIS ROLE YOU WILL NEED:

    • A minimum of 5 years of experience in administering employee benefit programs.
    • Bachelor's degree or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position. 
    • PHR/SPHR preferred.
    • Experience with unions a plus.
    • Proven experience with pension plans.
    • Experience with ADP or other cloud-based payroll systems is a plus.
    • Experience in processing employment-related government filings.
    • Thorough knowledge of office procedures, practices, and terminology.
    • Ability to deal effectively and tactfully with employees and vendors.
    • Ability to prioritize and perform multiple tasks.
    • Evidence of innovative problem-solving.
    • Intermediate to advanced skill with Microsoft Office including Excel.
    • Extreme attention to detail.
    • Evidence of ability to maintain confidential information.
    • Excellent verbal and writing skills.
