Position Overview:
Masterworks is the largest buyer of Post War and Contemporary art in the art market and plans to acquire up to $700 million in artwork this year. We are looking for a New York-based Specialist in Post War and Contemporary Art to assist in those efforts, advising on, sourcing and managing acquisitions for our growing portfolio of blue-chip art. Our ideal candidate has a deep familiarity working with blue-chip art and a passion for transacting in the market.
Key Responsibilities:
As a Specialist on the Masterworks team, you will be responsible for the following:
- Driving the strategy behind Masterworks Acquisitions
- Developing and managing relationships with collectors, dealers, galleries and art advisors
- Sourcing and managing the acquisition of paintings by artists like Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, Keith Haring, and Joan Mitchell
- Advising on pricing strategy, fair market value, and art market intelligence for blue-chip paintings in the $500k to $5mm price range
- Driving strategic negotiations for acquisitions of works sourced by the team
- Proactively generating new business opportunities and deepening existing relationships
- Vetting prospective sellers
- Attending art fairs, collector dinners or events, and exhibitions to generate new business
- Assisting acquisitions team with routine pricing sessions and artist market analysis
- Viewing paintings and assessing condition prior to acquisition
Measurements of Success:
In the first few months you will:
- Get fully up to speed on Masterworks' acquisitions criteria and understand the target artist list
- Take on management of 50+ existing relationships, as well as, introducing Masterworks to potential partners or clients
- Source dozens of works for the team to research for potential fit
- Successfully complete a number of acquisitions for the company
- Engage in regular client development meetings and work with the Acquisitions team to build appropriate strategies around key clients
- Familiarize yourself with Masterworks business model and be able to explain it to prospective business partners
Qualifications:
- Senior-level candidates 4+ years in a specialist role at a leading gallery or auction house or as an independent art advisor
- Expertise in Post-War and Contemporary Art at $500k+ price point
- Experience with negotiations and ability to multitask
- Team player, proactive, highly organized and attentive to detail
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Fluency in at least one other language is preferred
- Ability to travel (local and international)

How does Masterworks think about compensation?
The compensation range for the role is $80-100k (inclusive only of base salary, and exclusive of other potential competitive benefits such as on-target commission, bonus payments, and equity). Our ranges are very broad to accommodate all types of candidates and encourage growth. Specific compensation offered to a candidate may be dependent on factors such as education, experience, qualifications, and alignment with market data. Exceptional candidates may receive salaries outside of the posted ranges.
