    We are looking for an experienced data science analyst to join our talented team of Economics professionals.  The ideal candidate holds a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in fields related to economics, statistics, data management, and computer science.  Ideally, the candidate has had 2-5 years of experience working closely with real-world data.  

    The primary role at Mather Economics will be to work with the Director of Research and Product Development with growing and developing new processes, analytics, and products, to support both internal and client needs.  The Data Science Analyst III will be responsible for learning Mather Economics’ proprietary operations and Big Data practice, including key coding and statistical languages, such as Hive, Pig, R, Stata, Unix, and other languages as needed.  The role will serve multiple priorities across the company. 

    The major function will be planning and developing new methods to transform raw unstructured data into consistent and usable data for a variety of outputs.  The Data Science Consultant will also be expected to assist in the development of new modeling techniques using machine learning and other advanced statistical methods.  Lastly, he or she will assist in the creation of new reporting and visualization for both internal and external audiences.  In this role, the data science consultant will also support the Director of Research and Product Development with the preparation of deliverables and recommendations for individual projects and clients as needed. 

    Working with other consulting teams in a cross-company environment should be expected as new research and development becomes part of daily work operations, standard practices, and established in templates.  Mather Economics’ analysts and economists will be the direct users of the data and research to deliver custom analysis and deliverables as required by each client engagement.  The successful candidate works autonomously, is proactive, takes initiative and is an avid problem solver.  He or she exercises excellent judgment at all times, is customer focused, possesses excellent communication skills and works well with others across all levels of the organization. 

    The successful candidate must have a demonstrable knowledge of skills and prior performance required to be successful in this role, such as:

    • Handling large datasets
    • Cleaning and ensuring data consistency using any of the following or comparable tools: SQL, Excel, VBA, Stata, R, SAS, Python, Unix, Hive, Spark, Pig, Hbase, JavaScript…etc.
    • Developing statistical models to forecast trends, predict outcomes, or measure relationships using any of the following or comparable techniques: linear regression, discrete choice models, machine learning, risk management, survival analysis, decision trees, clustering…etc.
    • Preparing reporting and visualization of complex statistical modeling using any of the following or comparable tools: PowerPoint, Excel, R, Prezi, Tableau, LogiXML, Pentaho…etc.
    • Presenting the approach, analysis, results, and recommendations in a concise and understandable form to superiors and a non-technical audience
    • Ability to learn complex processes, data, and concepts and apply the new information immediately to a new set of projects/goals
    • Strong sense of ownership, responsibility, and maturity in daily work functions
    • High level of motivation and aptitude under a challenging and dynamic environment

    REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE POSITION: 

    • Bachelor's degree or higher in economics, statistics, computer science, IT, or related fields
    • 2-5 years of experience using common statistical and data management tools, such as SQL, SAS, R, Stata, Python, Excel, Unix
    • Demonstrated experience with large real-world data
    • Demonstrated experience developing a project from start to completion, including data collection/preparation, modeling selection and application, and presenting results/recommendations to others
    • Ability to be flexible and adaptive in a dynamic and changing environment as directed by development/client needs
    • Prior experience working in a consulting or business environment
    • Strong communications skills, both verbal and written
    • Strong Time Management and Project Management skills 
    • Ability to work and learn autonomously but use proper judgment of when to escalate questions to supervisors 
    • Strong collaborator and team-player who is results-driven
