Key Differences Between HVAC Service Technician and Startup Technician:
While the skills of both roles are similar, there are notable distinctions:
- No On-Call Hours: Startup Technicians do not require on-call hours.
- Installation Focus: Startup Technicians work on installing unit accessories and preparing units for in-house or factory startup on construction job sites rather than existing occupied facilities.
- No Preventative Maintenance: Startup Technicians do not perform preventative maintenance.
- Relationship Development: Startup projects involve building strong relationships with General Contractors and prioritizing customer service. Startup processes for new equipment can span multiple months.
- Attention to Detail: Startup requires meticulous attention to detail and paperwork, including compliance with manufacturer requirements and coordination with construction Project Management teams.
- Collaboration: Startup roles involve frequent communication with Building Automation / controls teams, electricians, and fire alarm contractors.
- Flexible Hours: Flexible hours, while still offering a full workweek with overtime opportunities.
Essential Duties
- Perform pre-functional inspections/checklists and startup of commercial HVAC systems.
- Conduct installations, diagnostics, and repairs on systems during startup and warranty periods.
- Interpret drawings, submittal data, and installation/operation manuals to ensure complete startup according to manufacturer recommendations.
- Document work by completing all necessary paperwork for each job and each piece of equipment.
- Assist installation mechanics in completing and mounting field-installed devices on equipment before startup as required.
- Troubleshoot issues as they arise.
- Collaborate with Commissioning agents as necessary and complete required documentation.
Qualifications
- Possession of a current valid driver's license and the ability to pass a drug test and comprehensive background check.
- Minimum of 8 years of experience in servicing and starting up commercial HVAC equipment, including CSC, split systems, pumps, VAV boxes, etc.
- Extensive knowledge of the construction and operation of various HVAC systems, including DX systems, water-based cooling, and heating systems.
- Experience with standard HVAC system operations and maintenance.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and related tasks efficiently.
- Proficiency in controls, including hands-on wiring concepts and controls software.
- Current knowledge of common installation codes and practices.

- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Applications.
- Preferred experience with CX Alloy or similar software.
