    About PBD

Poindexter by Design is a mechanical engineering firm that eliminates the bottlenecks keeping innovative hardware trapped. We provide elite design, modeling, analysis, and documentation services so complex machinery succeeds on the factory floor and on time.

Since 2019, we've been a small, high-output team punching way above our weight. Our clients range from hardware startups to established OEMs, and the work keeps coming. We're looking for experienced independent contractors who can plug in and deliver.

    The Engagement

We're looking for an established mechanical design contractor to take on defined projects and project scopes alongside our core team. Our work spans metal fabrication design (sheet metal, weldments), precision machined parts and assemblies, automation equipment, and everything in between. You don't need to be an expert in all of it, but you need deep experience in at least one of these areas.

This is a good fit if you already run your own contracting practice and want a steady source of challenging, well-scoped work from a team that respects your expertise and your time.

    What You'll Do

    • Deliver mechanical design scopes from concept through production-ready documentation
    • Produce high-quality CAD models, drawings, and documentation that meet PBD's standards
    • Communicate clearly on progress, questions, and deadlines
    • Collaborate with our engineering team on technical challenges as projects require
    • Hit agreed-upon deliverables and timelines, managing your own schedule and methods

    What We're Looking For

    • 5+ years of mechanical design engineering experience
    • Currently working as an independent contractor or consultant (or running your own engineering business)
    • Deep experience in one or more of: sheet metal design, weldment design, precision machined parts, assemblies, automation/equipment design, or GD&T documentation
    • Expertise in SolidWorks or Onshape
    • Detail-oriented and fast. We value both equally.
    • Reliable availability of [10-20] hours per week and responsiveness during US business hours

    Bonus points:

    • Experience in a consulting/services environment (multi-client, deadline-driven)
    • Breadth across multiple design disciplines (fabrication + precision, for example)
    • Injection molding or additive manufacturing design experience
    • Background in custom machinery or automation

    Why PBD

    • ** True design work.** We work across a variety of industries on challenging engineering design efforts that others can't solve.
    • ** Well-scoped projects.** Clear deliverables, clear deadlines, no busywork.
    • ** Steady work.** Consistent hours from a growing firm with a strong client pipeline.
    • ** Respect for your expertise.** We hire contractors to deliver results, not to be micromanaged.
    • ** A path to more.** Strong contractors are first in line as we scale from 3 to 7-10 engineers, if that's ever something you want.
