Mechanical Designer
Hopkins, MN | Direct-Hire | $30.00-$40.00/hr |Onsite
Konik is partnering with an automated equipment company that is looking to add a Mechanical Designer to their team. The Mechanical Designer plays a key role in the development and documentation of automated equipment and custom machinery. This position supports project engineers by translating conceptual ideas into detailed 3D models, assemblies, and manufacturing drawings. The Mechanical Designer will collaborate closely with engineering, production, and procurement teams to create efficient, manufacturable, and cost-effective equipment designs that meet customer and internal requirements.
This is a hands-on, technical position ideal for a designer with a strong understanding of mechanical systems, motion control, and machine design who enjoys bringing complex automation concepts to life.
Key Responsibilities:
Design and Drafting
- Develop detailed 3D models, assemblies, and manufacturing drawings using SolidWorks for automated machinery, subassemblies, and components.
- Create accurate Bill of Materials (BOMs) and complete print packages for release to purchasing and manufacturing.
- Translate project requirements and engineering concepts into robust, manufacturable designs.
- Apply GD&T principles to ensure clear, precise dimensioning and tolerancing on critical components.
- Maintain and revise existing drawings and models to support product updates and engineering change orders (ECOs).
Engineering Collaboration & Project Support
- Work directly with Project Engineers and Mechanical Engineers to support the design, build, and commissioning of automated systems.
- Participate in design reviews, providing input on manufacturability, assembly, and field service considerations.
- Contribute to DFM/DFA (Design for Manufacturability and Assembly) efforts to improve quality, cost, and assembly time.
- Reverse-engineer components and assemblies when required to create updated CAD data or improve existing systems.
- Support prototype builds and assist with documentation for R&D and new product development projects.
Documentation & Process Management
- Develop and maintain organized project documentation, including part drawings, assembly files, revision histories, and BOMs.
- Collaborate with manufacturing and procurement to ensure accurate and complete technical information is available for production.
- Adhere to revision control and configuration management standards to maintain data integrity.
- Update records within the company’s ERP system to align with current production and inventory processes.
Cross-Functional and Production Support
- Work with manufacturing, fabrication, and assembly teams to troubleshoot design issues and provide technical support during build phases.
- Partner with the controls engineering group to ensure mechanical designs accommodate sensors, actuators, and electrical components.
- Conduct vendor research and assist in sourcing components and materials for new and existing equipment.
- Provide hands-on assistance in prototype assembly and field installation as needed.
Continuous Improvement
- Identify and implement opportunities to streamline design processes and improve efficiency in mechanical drafting.
- Support company-wide lean initiatives by developing standardized templates, best practices, and design libraries.
- Contribute to the evolution of design standards for modularity, repeatability, and reduced lead times.
Key Requirements:
Education
- Associate degree in Mechanical Design Technology, Engineering Technology, or a related technical field (Bachelor’s preferred).
- Equivalent work experience considered for highly qualified candidates.
Experience
- Minimum of 3+ years of mechanical design experience in custom equipment, automation, or industrial machinery.
- Demonstrated proficiency with SolidWorks (3D modeling, assemblies, and drawing creation).
- Experience designing with sheet metal, machined parts, weldments, and motion systems.
- Familiarity with automation components such as conveyors, linear motion systems, pneumatic actuators, and gear drives.
- Exposure to food-grade or packaging automation environments preferred but not required.
Technical Skills
- Strong knowledge of manufacturing processes — including machining, fabrication, and assembly.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook) and familiarity with ERP or PDM systems.
- Ability to perform basic engineering calculations for fits, loads, and material selection.
- Understanding of tolerancing, materials, and fastener selection for mechanical assemblies.
- Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to balance speed, precision, and creativity.
Compensation & Benefits
- Competitive salary based on experience.
- Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance.
- 401(k) plan with company match.
- Paid time off, holidays, and flexible scheduling options.
- Professional development and training opportunities.
