****Job Summary

We are looking for individuals who have a passion for education and helping students applying to medical school. Working together with a physician advisor, the writing advisor will support medical school and residency applicants through the application process, helping the applicant draft, revise, and edit the personal statement, activities section, and secondary applications, among other materials. The goal is to provide polished documents that are compelling and representative of the applicant.

Responsibilities

The writing advisor will assist in several capacities:

• develop a strong working relationship with the physician advisor, acting as a unified team that will support the applicant through the application process
• assist applicants in restructuring content and ensuring responses and essays have a logical and cohesive flow
• provide a healthy balance of thorough in-text suggestions and marginalia that are relevant and actionable, enabling the applicant to develop content
• edit materials for clarity, tone, and syntax
• proofread materials for grammar and word choice
• answer questions about the writing process for specific materials
• maintain a supportive environment for the applicant through proactive measures, including consistent check-ins, resource sharing, and brief video calls
• partner with the physician advisor to ensure the client submits their best application while also progressing through the application process in an efficient manner

While there are opportunities to provide teachable moments with clients, this is not a teaching position. We are also not in the business of writing content for our clients. Our clients and fellow advisors value efficient and comprehensive work, which includes a hands-on approach and supporting clients in creating original and compelling application materials. So, heavily marked-up documents with robust marginalia are welcome here! The goal is to help clients submit their best application and present their most authentic selves.

This is, largely, a seasonal position. While there can be work year-round, our peak season is from early March until the end of September. You will be expected to work with multiple clients at one time and need to commit to working with the client until their package or service is complete, which can take months to a year (work fluctuates during the time you work with the client and there can be gaps in work). This is a remote position that requires you to have a reliable connection to the Internet and access to Microsoft Word.

Qualifications

• a BA and an MA in the humanities or “writing-heavy” major (professional experience in addition to the expectations below can be substituted for an MA)
• a combination of the following professional experiences:
  • 2+ years of experience in education and/or training and development. This can include university teaching/working as a teaching assistant (especially for a writing program or humanities course), teaching grades 9-12 (ELA), tutoring (ELA, writing), facilitating of training courses, developing courses, working as a training and development manager/coordinator, working as a paraprofessional or instructional assistant, and developing ELA curriculum, among other relevant roles.
  • 2+ years in a writing-heavy role. This can include editing, grant writing, journalist roles, copyediting, and content writing, among others.

Compensation

This is a part-time, contract role. For compensation, we use a Relative Value Unit (RVU) based system. MedSchoolCoach allocates a specific amount of RVUs to each service and package, determining the amounts based on multiple variables, including anticipated hours, that impacts a writing advisor's ability to complete the work. Writing advisors can expect to earn approximately $45 per RVU. which results in flat sums of up to $1,125 per client. These sums are distributed via monthly installments (up to 12). Raises will be given for years of service and exceptional work.
