    ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW:

    Face to Face Health and Counseling is a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing economic and health equity for youth ages 11–24. We do this work through a comprehensive approach that includes medical, mental health, housing, education and employment, youth justice, and community programs. We take a strengths-based and trauma-informed approach to our work and center the needs of young people impacted by racism and other forms of oppression and marginalization. Founded in 1972, Face to Face serves more than 5,000 youth annually.

    JOB SUMMARY:

    The Medical Assistant – Clinical and Laboratory Support provides both clinical and laboratory services to ensure high-quality patient care and efficient clinic operations. This position combines clinical and laboratory responsibilities, supporting both patients and the healthcare team. Key duties include rooming patients, collecting and processing specimens, performing laboratory procedures, and providing health education. The role also ensures lab safety, maintains inventory, and supports compliance with regulatory standards. This integrated position is essential to the smooth functioning of the clinic and contributes to a welcoming and effective care environment. This position also assists with tasks outside the direct responsibilities of the role when needed to ensure clinic operations. This is a part-time position at 27.5 hours a week.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Laboratory Support

    • Perform phlebotomy, process and prepare blood and urine for in-house testing and lab send-outs.
    • Ensure medical staff adhere to the laboratory’s quality control procedures, regulations, and documentation.
    • Act as the lead for monitoring and maintaining lab inventory, ordering and restocking supplies; assist with overall clinic inventory, ordering and restocking.
    • Perform daily, weekly, and monthly quality control, troubleshooting, and equipment maintenance.
    • Make appropriate decisions based on the quality control results regarding patient testing. Notify appropriate staff when problems occur.
    • Ensure timely communication of difficult or unusual requests, results, or test follow-up that is necessary to completion of the procedure.
    • Monitor and perform administrative functions to ensure accurate test ordering and reporting of patient results.
    • Monitor and perform specimen collection to ensure the accurate and appropriate performance of patient testing while maintaining patient dignity, comfort, and confidentiality.
    • Monitor and document in lab log reports to MDH untreated STI’s using the state reporting form.
    • Communicate errors to immediate supervisor and document when errors are found.
    • Maintain knowledge of, and comply with, all relevant laws, regulations, policies, procedures and standards.
    • Uphold medical clinic compliance with legislation and regulations related to health care clinics (HIPAA, OSHA, CLIA, etc.).
    • Maintain effective working relationships with external agencies and partners to ensure ongoing compliance and support lab operations.
    • Manage the disposal of hazardous and nonhazardous waste.
    • Ensure the laboratory is clean and well organized.

    Clinical Support

    • Provide clinical support to assure time sensitive and smooth clinic flow.
    • Assist with rooming and scheduling to determine preventive health or acute care visit.
    • Review patient’s health history and presenting concerns/symptoms, and prepare them for exam or visit as indicated.
    • Utilize standing orders for appropriate care.
    • Administer medications as ordered by providers.
    • Record and monitor immunizations with MIIC.
    • Follow safe vaccine storage and the documentation process for the Minnesota Vaccine for Children program and UUAV.
    • Provide health education on variety of topics including preparation for gynecological exam, STI prevention and treatment, and family planning methods in a nondirective style of education.
    • Follow laboratory procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analysis, reporting and maintaining records of patient’s test results.
    • Clean and autoclave speculums and clinic instruments.
    • Clean and stock exam rooms with supplies daily.
    • Complete opening and closing procedures.

    General

    • Work as a team member to monitor and improve patient flow.
    • Actively participate in creating and implementing improvements.
    • Provide all services guided by the evidence-based principles for helping youth overcome homelessness.
    • Step in and help “get the job done" to ensure clinic operations.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.

    ** QUALIFICATIONS:**

    • Certification by AAMA at time of employment or within 6 months of hire preferred.
    • Completion of an accredited medical assistance training program.
    • Minimum of one year of experience in providing patient care and laboratory services in a clinic setting.
    • Qualified to work in a highly complex laboratory as mandated in the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act of 1988 (CLIA).
    • Prior lab experience and knowledge to work in all areas of the lab.
    • Strong computer skills and experience with electronic health records
    • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
    • Demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively with people of diverse ethnic, economic, racial and cultural backgrounds.

    Essential Onsite – This role requires the employee to be onsite.

    • Must possess speech, hearing, and sight skills to perform the functions of the position.
    • Manual dexterity is required.
    • Exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common to a clinic environment.
    • Must be able to speak, read and write English proficiently.
    • Ability to lift equipment or supplies, usually under 25 pounds.

    PAY & BENEFITS:

    The pay rate for this position is between $25 and $25.50, based on qualifications.
