Overview: We are seeking experienced medical coders to provide remote medical coding services for military treatment facilities (MTFs) in accordance with Department of Defense (DoD) guidelines and military directives. This role will involve coding for a variety of patient encounters, ensuring accuracy and compliance with federal regulations and coding standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Medical Coding Services: Utilize best commercial practices in conjunction with military directives to produce efficient medical coding services.
Encounter Coding: Accurately code various encounter types including inpatient, outpatient, Emergency Department (ED), day surgery, observation, OB triage, and clinic visits.
ICD-10 and CPT Coding: Review medical records to assign correct Evaluation and Management (E&M), Diagnosis (ICD-10), Current Procedure Terminology (CPT), and Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) codes, as well as modifiers and units of service.
Backlog Management: Address incomplete or uncoded encounters (31 days or more since date of service) and ensure backlog workload is cleared within the established timeframe.
Compliance & Accuracy: Ensure coding accuracy standards of 97% for diagnosis, E&M, and procedure codes, and maintain compliance with federal coding regulations and DoD guidelines.
Documentation Clarification: Obtain clarification from providers for any conflicting, ambiguous, or non-specific documentation.
Productivity: Complete 80% or more of the assigned workload within each performance period (quarter), maintaining the required timeliness standards.
Quality Control: Participate in internal and government-initiated peer reviews and audits to ensure quality and compliance. Provide feedback and make necessary corrections based on audit results.
Encounter Expectations:
Inpatient: 4.5 encounters per hour
Day Surgery: 7 encounters per hour
Emergency Department (ED): 12 encounters per hour
Observation: 12 encounters per hour
OB Triage: 12 encounters per hour
Outpatient in a Bed (OP In A Bed): 12 encounters per hour
Clinic Billable: 12 encounters per hour
Outpatient: 12 encounters per hour

Equipment & Support:
All work will be conducted off-site with equipment and resources supplied by the contractor.
Access to military health systems such as MHS GENESIS, 3M Encompass 360, and others will be provided by the Government upon completion of required training.
Training & Certification Requirements:
HIPAA & Privacy Act training, OPSEC, DoD Cyber Awareness Training, and other relevant training as required by DHA and MCPB.
Maintain unrestricted medical coding certifications in the U.S. jurisdiction where services are performed.
Knowledge and use of ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT®, and HCPCS coding systems.
Training & Certification Requirements
Tier 1 Investigations
Qualifications:
Certification in Medical Coding (e.g., CPC, CCS).
Minimum of 2-3 years of experience coding in an inpatient or outpatient setting.
Strong knowledge of federal coding regulations and DoD guidelines.
Familiarity with the MHS GENESIS or other similar military health systems preferred.
Excellent attention to detail and ability to work independently to meet deadlines.
Additional Information:
This is a non-personal services contract, and work will be performed under a Type II configuration off-site.
Contract coders are not required to work on federally recognized holidays.
