Position Summary
The Medical & Hazardous Waste Hauler (Class C) is responsible for the safe, compliant collection and transportation of regulated medical waste, hazardous waste, and universal waste from customer facilities to permitted transfer, treatment, or disposal facilities within California. This position operates non-CDL vehicles and requires strict compliance with the California Medical Waste Management Act (MWMA), California Department of Public Health (CDPH), Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC), Cal/OSHA, and applicable DOT regulations.
Key Responsibilities
Transportation & Operations
Safely operate company Class C (non-CDL) vehicles in accordance with company policy and California vehicle codes
Perform scheduled waste pickups from healthcare facilities, laboratories, veterinary clinics, assisted living facilities, and commercial customers
Load, secure, and transport regulated waste in compliance with Title 22 CCR, MWMA, and company procedures
Deliver waste to permitted transfer stations, treatment facilities, or disposal sites
Maintain route efficiency while adhering to regulatory and safety requirements
Compliance & Documentation
Accurately complete and maintain California medical waste tracking documents, hazardous waste manifests (when applicable), and internal chain-of-custody records
Verify waste characterization, labeling, container integrity, and segregation prior to transport
Comply with CDPH Medical Waste Management Act, DTSC hazardous waste regulations, Cal/OSHA standards, and DOT 49 CFR as applicable to Class C operations
Use electronic manifesting and routing systems when required
Safety & Equipment
Conduct daily pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections in compliance with company and California safety standards
Properly wear and maintain required PPE (gloves, protective clothing, eye protection, etc.)
Follow company spill response and exposure control plans in accordance with Cal/OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard (8 CCR §5193)
Immediately report spills, exposures, accidents, or compliance concerns
Customer Interaction
Provide professional, courteous service at customer locations
Communicate discrepancies, access issues, or compliance concerns to dispatch or management
Represent the company in a professional and compliant manner at all times
Required Qualifications
Valid California Class C driver’s license
Clean driving record and ability to meet insurance requirements
Ability to pass background check, drug screening, and physical as required
Ability to regularly lift, push, and pull up to 75 lbs
Willingness to complete required California medical waste and hazardous waste training
Preferred Qualifications
Experience handling regulated medical waste or hazardous waste in California
Familiarity with CDPH, DTSC, and MWMA requirements
Experience completing California medical waste tracking documents or hazardous waste manifests
HazMat awareness training (company-provided if needed)
Physical & Work Environment
Frequent lifting, bending, standing, and walking
Exposure to regulated medical and hazardous waste with proper PPE and training
Indoor and outdoor work environments, including healthcare and industrial facilities
