MeliBio is seeking a passionate and experienced Data Scientist to join and work alongside our scientific teams. This individual will be working on diverse projects in order to create efficient tools for analyzing data from multiple input streams.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a small and dynamic team dedicated to developing a new approach to food, and to contribute to the growing need for realizing the end of using animals in the production of food for humans. This is a full-time position located at our headquarters in Oakland, CA, and will report directly to the CTO.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Designing analyses to help make recommendations for product or R&D
• Designing experiments in collaboration with experimentalist teams to test, validate, and refine models
• Pursuing continued learning about scientific topics in the world of food: biology, chemistry, food, protein, aroma and/or texture science
• Leading or supervising the curation of databases
• Designing and developing machine learning approaches that will help improve our products
• Take a leading role in developing current and future precision fermentation technologies
• Research, collect, and deploy new knowledge to guide microbial development and food science efforts

REQUIREMENTS

• B.S. (with 2+ years experience), M.S. (with 1-2+ years experience), or PhD (with 0-1+ years experience) in Computer Science, Data Science, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Engineering, or similar
• Machine learning and programming experience in a professional or research setting
• Fluency in R, JAVA, and Python scientific stack (NumPy, SciPy, scikit-learn, pandas)
• Excellent problem solving skills and ability to think out of the box.
• Strong communication and presentation skills for internal and external meetings.
• Ability to collaborate with the experimental analytic chemistry, microbiology, and food science teams
• Abilities to work effectively with diverse and dynamic teams.
• Ability to handle ambiguity, including the evolving objectives and approaches of an innovative company.
• Preferred: Experience and knowledge of biological and chemical systems, metabolic pathways, chemical synthesis, DNA/RNA sequencing methodologies etc. 
• Preferred: Experience in the analysis of data from GCMS, LCMS, or HPLC instruments
• Related: Experience using AMDIS/NIST software packages
• Preferred: Experience in the analysis of data from bioreactors, microbial growth kinetics, protein/enzyme production and kinetics etc. 
• Ability to communicate effectively with other scientists and non-scientists alike
• Team player with ability to collaborate effectively
