    Job Description

    The Trauma Program Manager in collaboration with the System Director of Emergency Services will be responsible for operation of the adult Trauma Center at MelroseWakefield Healthcare.  This includes organizing the services and systems necessary for a multidisciplinary approach throughout the continuum of trauma care and for a comprehensive performance improvement and patient safety (PIPS) process for a Level lll Trauma Center. 

    PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY:

    • Oversee the PIPS program of the Trauma Division in accordance with American College of Surgeon (ACS) guidelines.
    • Assess the quality of care provided to trauma patients (adherence to protocols, conduct of resuscitation, audit filters) in collaboration with Quality Improvement (QI) team.
    • Identifies performance improvement projects for interdisciplinary collaboration.
    • Work with QI team to identify problems with trauma care and intervene when appropriate or refer problems to the appropriate individual.
    • Facilitate coordination of interdisciplinary trauma performance improvement conferences for the adult trauma service.
    • Identifies deficiencies impeding the maintenance of the trauma center standards and suggests methods for addressing these deficiencies.
    • In conjunction with QI, review trauma cases and provides feedback re: quality issues to health care providers both within and outside of MelroseWakefield Healthcare.
    • Coordinates preparation of re-verification application, pre-review questionnaire, and supporting materials for American College of Surgeons trauma center verification when required.
    • Coordinates communication with the state ME Office to receive autopsy reports in a timely fashion.
    • Works with other health care providers involved in the care of trauma patients in developing protocols for the care of injured patients.
    • Collaborates on trauma protocol updates.
    • Responds to inquiries about trauma protocols.
    • Data Management
    • Supervises the Trauma Registrar to ensure continuous data entry and maintenance of an updated registry.
    • In conjunction with the Trauma Registrar, provides information for analysis and evaluation of the quality of patient care, including epidemiological and demographic characteristics of trauma patients.
    • Reports data to the MA State Trauma registry and to the National Trauma Data Bank. This includes the incidence, care, cost, outcome, stratification of injury by demographic parameters (age, gender, ethnicity, etc.), and the creation of population-based depiction of injury.
    • Describing the results of interventions including survival and post-injury quality of life and function.
    • Documenting of the resource required by the trauma program to facilitate reliable evaluation of treatments currently considered standard of care, new strategies of care, and impact of innovative technology.
    • Actively assisting in identifying and reporting of the clinical and system related data to our monthly Steering Committee.
    • Manages, as appropriate, the operational and personnel aspects of the trauma program, serving as a liaison to the hospital administration.
    • Facilitate trauma patient transfer process.
    • Collaborate on the development of trauma transfer protocols.
    • Monitors adherence to trauma transfer protocol process.
    • In collaboration with QI department serve as a resource person to staff caring for trauma patients. Collaborates with Nursing, Social Work Service, rehabilitation and medical staff, on issues related to trauma patient care.
    • Facilitates and participates in interdisciplinary educational programs for health care professionals and the community concerning all phases of trauma care.
    • Directs outreach and injury prevention programs.
    • Coordinates Advanced Trauma Life Support Course when applicable.
    • Participates in education of nursing staff and pre-hospital care providers.
    • Assess needs for trauma educational programs and coordinates these as necessary.
    • Maintains current knowledge of “Resources for Optimal Care of the Injured Patient”
    • Participates in educational activities outside of the institution.
    • Shows evidence of educational preparations, with a minimum of 16 hours of trauma related CME per year.
    • Actively participates in professional organizations at the State and National levels and promotes the Trauma Division’s stature in these organizations.
    • Functions as part of the Professional Education team to provide trauma/critical care education modules to the critical care areas in the hospital.
    • Functions as a member of the Emergency Management service given the nature of trauma.

    MANAGEMENT

    • Monitors fiscal status of Trauma program including preparing the annual budget, reviewing reimbursement, preparing variance reports, and modifying the business plan for the service in conjunction with the System Director of Surgical Services
    • Provides leadership in developing quality driven and cost effective processes.
    • Collaborates with team to develop program goals.
    • Ensures staff competence through annual evaluations.
    • Initiates and manages change, ensuring appropriate support and resources.                                   
    • Performs other diversified duties as requested.
  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    EDUCATION:

    • Bachelor's of Science Degree or master’s degree in Health Care related field, i.e., MSN, MBA, MPH or Health Policy.
    • Current Commonwealth of Massachusetts Registered Nurse License preferred.

    EXPERIENCE:

    • Progressive managerial or supervisory experience required. Emergency / Critical care Nursing preferred.

    SKILLS/ABILITIES:

    • Must have demonstrated clinical competence in nursing practice or in depth understanding of continuum of care for the injured patient.
    • Demonstrated leadership qualities.
    • Ability to work collaboratively with nurses, physicians and administrative colleagues.
    • Excellent communication skills.
    • Ability to prepare and analyze data from multiple sources.
    • Must attend ATS Trauma Program Manager course
    • Must attend STN TOPIC course
    • Must take FEMA NIMS certifications 100, 200, 700
