  • Responsibilities

    JOB SUMMARY:  Work with students who have a wide range of learning, mental, and physical disabilities. Adapt general education lessons and teach various subjects, such as reading, writing, and math, to students with mild and moderate disabilities.

     

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    1. Assess students’ skills to determine their needs and to develop teaching plans

    2. Adapt lessons to meet needs of students

    3. Develop individualized education programs (IEPs) for each student

    4. Plan, organize, and assign activities that are specific to each student’s abilities

    5. Teach and mentor students as a class, in small groups and one-on-one

    6. Implement IEPs, assess students’ performance, and track their progress

    7. Update IEPs throughout the school year to reflect students’ progress and goals

    8. Discuss student’s progress with parents, teachers, counselors, and administrators

    9. Supervise and mentor teacher assistants who work with students with disabilities

    10. Prepare and help students transition from grade to grade and after graduation

    11. Initiate, facilitate, and moderate classroom discussions.

    12. Maintain student attendance records, grades, and other documents as applicable.

    13. Select and obtain materials and supplies such as textbooks and project paraphernalia.

    14. Develop and enforce classroom rules to afford the best learning environment.

    15. Monitor students’ behavior and make physical observations for signs of abuse or learning disorders and report, if necessary.

    16. Customize lessons to accommodate various students’ learning pace and styles.

    17. Integrate technology as a learning tool for students.

    18. Foster positive rapport and relationships with students.

    19. Take appropriate precautions to protect students, equipment, material, and facilities.

    20. Re-teach when necessary.

    21. Measure student growth using established goals and objectives.

    22. Use a variety of evaluative tools to test for understanding and application of subject matter.

    23. Assume a team approach to the fulfillment of Individualized Education Plans as part of full inclusion Special Education program.

    24. Demonstrate professional, ethical, and responsible behavior, and serve as a role model for all students.

    25. Remain knowledgeable and comply with all school, local, state, and federal regulations.

     
    

    ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    1. Supervise students outside the classroom; lunchtime, detention, and other events.

    2. Coordinate with other staff for planning of special events.

    3. Communicate with parents about students’ progress.

    4. Create partnerships with parents/caregivers and colleagues.

    5. Provide clear and timely information to parents/caregivers and colleagues.

    6. Encourage parents/caregivers to become active partners in their children’s education and to become involved in school and classroom.

    7. Be available for Open Houses, Parent-Teacher Conferences and other events involving parents.

    8. May teach / supervise students in extra-curricular and after-school activities.

    9. Complete additional tasks as deemed necessary and/or requested.

     
    

    MINIMUM EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION, AND LICENSURE:

    1. Bachelor’s Degree in Education.

    2. Teacher’s license provided through LA Department of Education.

     
    

    MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

    1. Master-level knowledge of English and great command of professional communication form.

    2. Communication Skills – Must be able to collaborate with other teachers, students, and parents.

    3. Instructional Skills – Need to be able to explain difficult concepts to students in a manner that is understandable.  In addition, must be able to engage students in learning and adapt lessons to each student’s needs.

    4. Patience – Must be able to be patient when students struggle with grasping covered material.

     
    

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

    1. Frequent walking, stooping, kneeling to teach various topics.

    2. Must have great hand dexterity to utilize board, projector, and laptop, and grade papers.

    3. Occasional sitting or crouching.

    4. Must possess great hand and eye coordination for demonstration and classroom instruction.

    5. Some lifting, pushing/pulling in excess of least 50 lbs.

     

    WORK ENVIRONMENT:

    1. Climate – controlled classroom with artificial and/or natural light.

    2. Regular noise levels.

    3. No vibrations.
