    Mission

     

    To provide Travel Training and Transit Orientation services to customers with disabilities or others who seek to learn to use Metro's fixed route system through direct training primarily in the community teaching skills needed to access public transportation independently. May periodically work in the office performing tasks to support the services of the ADA Services department.

     

    Essential Outcomes

     

    • Provides direct training to customers teaching community safety as well as functional skills enabling consumers to access public transportation independently.
    • Provides to Travel Training Specialist regular and timely updates regarding customer's progress in learning travel training skills.
    • Updates the Travel Training Specialist in a timely manner regarding any problems and impediments to effective training that might arise.
    • Is capable of implementing a variety of training techniques to overcome training challenges.
    • Makes the determination when a consumer has completed travel training and that customer is ready to utilize Metro transportation independently.
    • Communicates with parents, spouses, and significant others who live with the customer regarding program related issues.
    • Implements natural supports with trainee at home, in the community, and at the destination.
    • Provides group training to Metro customers.
    • Participates in training activities to learn the customer travel training process.
    • Performs field observations and audits of Metro Travel Training related initiatives.
    • Helps create, review, and validate training schedules to ensure recommended routes and mode of transportation allows for efficient utilization of the customers' travel time.
    • Identifies any available time in trainers' schedule to promote Travel Training Program through in-person contact with community based agencies that serve people with disabilities and other target groups such as seniors.
    • Prepares a variety of reports for management such as activity reports.
    • Answer phone calls regarding travel training or other ADA department calls.
    • Make ID cards for reduced fare or ADA Paratransit customers.  Performs other duties as assigned.


    Required Skills

     

    Experience in working with people with disabilities. Understanding of disability and potential environmental and architectural barriers to community travel. Understanding of ADA paratransit eligibility. Thorough understanding of Metro's fixed route system - personal experience using the system is extremely helpful.   Strong interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with trainees, with trainee family members, significant others, and other members of the community or public. Analytical skills to find solutions to training issues encountered. Must have valid drivers license and reliable transportation.



    Required Experience

     

    HS or equivalent with some additional college work in Human Services, social work, rehabilitation, special education or related field.  A minimum of 6 months experience in Social work, education, rehabilitation, health care, or transportation field preferred.
