    ABOUT INTEROPERABILITY INSTITUTE'S INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

    The Interoperability Institute (IOI) Workforce Development goal is to provide early career opportunities to address the talent gap in information technology and healthcare to ensure the supply of talent meets the current and emerging needs of the healthcare IT industry. The Workforce Development team hosts a long standing Internship Program in partnership with our family of companies, including the Michigan Health Information Network (MiHIN) and Velatura. 

    Interns provide a fresh perspective on healthcare issues and create innovative solutions that help transform the healthcare industry. Interns are an essential part of the team at our growing, fast-paced health IT nonprofit. We look for self-motivated, professional intern candidates who can work independently and aren’t afraid to ask questions.

    POSITION DESCRIPTION - HUMAN RESOURCES/ PAYROLL INTERN

    • Internship November 2022 - August 2023

    • PAYROLL

      • Collaborate with mentor to maintain payroll information by collecting, calculating, and entering data in the payroll system

      • Update payroll records by entering changes in exemptions, insurance coverage, savings deductions, and job title and department transfers

      • Performs required registrations with state governments for unemployment taxes, etc.

      • Supporting payroll taxes

      • Manage state tax accounts to ensure compliance with federal, local payroll, wage, and hour laws.

    • HUMAN RESOURCES

      • Creating and pulling monthly, quarterly, and yearly data, when needed

      • Ensures all paperwork and electronic transactions are processed in a timely manner while maintaining confidentiality

      • Create documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and complete project research that supports the Human Resources Team

      • Complete other finance, HR, or benefit-related tasks as may be requested by management from time to time

    • ADMINISTRATIVE

      • Create and edit process documentation for Human Resources team and

      those they support

      • Take notes and complete action items on meetings with teammates

      • Distribute information via email and the internal web for meetings and

      notifications

    • Preferred skills: Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel

    • Preferred degree programs: Human Resources, or related experience

    INTERNSHIP PROGRAM BASICS

    • All our internships are remote, with laptop provided
    • 15 - 29 hours/week within our office hours (Eastern Time Zone)
    • Internships are a minimum 2 semester commitment
    • Internships generally start in January, May, and August
    • Earn hourly wage ($14/hour)
    • Internships are part-time, temporary positions
    • Mentored by a professional full time staff team member
    • Learn about cutting-edge healthcare initiatives
    • Network with health IT industry leaders
    • Collaborate with staff members and other interns on projects

    Interns may work up to 29 hours per week with the expectation of a minimum of 15 hours per week. All hours must be completed within our office hours Monday – Friday, 8 AM – 5 PM Eastern Time.

    The Internship Program accepts international students with up-to-date work authorization for off-campus employment.

    We recruit undergraduate and graduate students from many accredited colleges and universities. Interns must be an enrolled student for the duration of the internship, but degree area is not a concern. Our main interest is a willingness to learn and be productive.

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

    1. Must have reliable internet connection
    2. Must be at least 18 years old
    3. Must be available to work at least 15 hours/week for 2 semesters
    4. Must be enrolled in undergraduate or graduate program
    5. Quick learner in fast-paced, high-expectations environment
    6. Excellent written and verbal communication skills
    7. Ability to take initiative with little direction
    8. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, OneNote, Excel, Teams, PowerPoint, etc.)
    9. Able to pass a background check
    10. Note: Responsibilities vary greatly by department

    Interns are paired with a full-time team member to mentor them throughout the internship. Interns collaborate with their mentor, their team members, and other interns on tasks and projects. High-performing interns are encouraged to stay for multiple semesters.
