    West Michigan Academy of Arts & Academics is a TK-8 public school academy chartered by Grand Valley State University. We are located in Spring Lake and our students come from many surrounding districts in Ottawa and Muskegon counties. WMAAA focuses on arts integration and high academic achievement. We have a great team of teachers and staff who have been supporting and educating creative, artistic, and academically high achieving students for over 25 years!

    REPORTS TO : Athletic Director, Principal

    Summary : Part-time seasonal basketball coach is responsible for leading a middle school team by planning and conducting practices, teaching fundamental basketball skills and strategies, promoting teamwork and sportsmanship, and ensuring the safety and well-being of student athletes. Pay is $300 per season.

    Season: 7 weeks Oct. 20 – Dec. 17, 4-6 games, practices M, T, W 4-5 no practice the week of Thanksgiving

    Minimum Qualifications

    • High School Diploma
    • Successful basketball playing and coaching experience
    • In-depth understanding of basketball rules, techniques, and strategies
    • Strong leadership abilities to motivate and inspire young athletes
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with players, parents, and staff
    • A patient, resilient, and positive attitude when working with middle school students
    • Willingness to undergo necessary background checks and comply with school and district policies
    • Previous coaching experience is often preferred but may not be required

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

    • Managing equipment
    • Effectively communicating with players, parents, and school staff, all while fostering a positive team environment that emphasizes personal growth and academic eligibility
    • Organize and lead practices to teach and refine basketball skills, tactics, and physical conditioning appropriate for the players age and ability level.
    • Develop game strategies, select team positions, and make real-time decisions during competitions.
    • Foster a positive, supportive, and inclusive team environment, serving as a positive role model for student- athletes and instilling values like discipline, work ethic, and sportsmanship.
    • Effectively communicate with players, parents, and school administration about team activities, player progress, and important information.
    • Ensure the safety and well-being of all student-athletes during practices, games, and team events.
    • Keep records of player and team performance.
    • Manage team equipment and assist with administrative tasks, such as coordinating travel and scheduling.

    Key Outcomes:

    • Student-athletes improve their individual and team basketball skills
    • Players develop self-discipline, confidence, a strong work ethic, and positive social behavior
    • A sense of teamwork, sportsmanship, and pride is built within the team.

    Other/Miscellaneous:

    Must have regular and timely job attendance, performance, and the physical ability to do the job.
